I am looking at a 2001 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer. Its a 4x4, v-8 w/ 60k on the clock. I have search for about an hour on this site to find any specific problems related to this year and model w/o coming up with much.
Is there anything specifically I need to be looking for or aware of as a potental problem on this thing?
Not a bad year really. Check out Consumer Reports if you want to see how each year went. The '99 and '00 had a problem with the SOHC engine, but was fixed by '01. There are several other problems that plagued earlier years. When revised in '02 a set of new problems surfaced as is typical with re-designs.
Reliability is so different from car to car that it is best to have the car checked by an independant and trusted mechanic to determine it's condition.
Well I am not sure if I want to go off what consumer reports says just 100%. It rated the 2001 explorer as to have below average reliability and was on their list of used vehicles to avoid.
Also I was under the impression that the v-8 in the 2001 was the ol' pushrod 5.0 not the 4.6 sohc. Am I wrong on this one? For this particular vehicle i think I would prefer the 5.0.
Ford had most of the bugs worked out by the time they stopped making the second generation Explorers in 2001. The V8 and accompanying transmission are pretty bullet-proof assuming regular fluid changes have been done. Less serious problems with the 2001 EB include light out module (LOM) and blend door. You can find threads on both of these subjects by searching this forum.
