I noticed today after I was stuck wheel deep in the mud my 4wd was not working. I had it in 4 lo and the front drive shaft would turn but my wheels would were not spinning. I turned the locking hubs both ways but it didnt make a difference. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. My truck is a 99 Dually 4wd
Usualy I would say that it was a vacume leak but, if your hubs didn't work manually then you may need new hubs. The problems I've had with my 99' have all been vacume problems. I first noticed it when my vents would shift up to the defrost position when I turned on my 4x4. First check the hoses and fitting at the wheel, then check your lines going up to the vacume canister. I used a hand help pump to make sure they held a vacume. I've also had to replace my vacume pump too. Hope this helps if you need more help let me know.
nah the warns are good ole reliable manual only. when i know im in a situation where im gonna use 4x4 alot i just leave them locked and switch the tcase in and out. ive got a buddy in wyoming that has a 95 thats what he does seems like first snow puts the snow tires on and locks the hubs and leaves them that way all winter. its a little bit more wear and tear on the front axle parts cause now there actually moving now. but that truck has to have over 300k on it now and he hasnt had to do anything more than brakes and wheel bearings to it.
I have taken my hubs out before. I'm wondering if there is a way I could have put them back in wrong to where they wont lock? Or will they only go on when everything is lined up.
with the auto it could possibly have had a oring or the diphram not seat. does your air blow out your defrost vents when you try to put it in 4x4? i know on the manual hubs they will only go in one way and if they dont work the inner cone is usually broken or the end of the axle shaft is boogered up.
mine are manual locking, The front driveshaft and u-joints turn but the wheels will not turn, I guess both locking hubs are bad. Any more suggestions before I spend the $200.00 to replace them?
I agree with the warns!! I was never a fan of auto hubs! There to unreliable. We changed the auto hubs on my dads 2000 sd when he bought it last year. Just do as the other guys say, if you know your gonna need it lock them in and shift on the fly as usuall. I've had my hubs locked for over a month and just shift as i need it. No probs and i know i'm locked in!! Good luck!!
