I found a 74 F150 to use as a donor for my Disk brake conversion on my 66. I think i got just about everything i need but could not get the spindles off. Anyone have any tips on how to get these things off?
Did you get the caps of the top and bottom were the grease fittings are?,and the pin that runs thru the center held on by a nut on either side of the spindle. If so you need a BFH,a brass drift, and drive it out the bottom,
Take off the I-beams , & had one that came off &, 1 that did not but I have an axle press ! to press it out I used to heat up the spindles to remove em . But a press is alot better. I also removed the steer box, wiper motor w/ linkage, pedal assy. ,brake boster, brake lines mount's for the hose's, & complete line assy. from the frt.to use for pattern for reinstalling them on your ride. get the 9" out of it if it is a 352 or 390 it has a great 3rd member & should have 31 spline axles & the larger 3rd member
Is that the orange one at pick your part? That was the only candidate that I saw between the Ecologys and the Pick your part yards on Thursday! There another at the Haritage Road Ecology on the end of the road, but its spindles only and the I beam is bent. Good luck, Im going to steal my dads parts for this conversion and replace his later.
This one was at pick your part but it wasn't Orange. It looked kind of Maroon. I think it was just recently brought in because i don't remember seeing it there a couple of weeks ago.
Maybe i'll go over to Heritage road and pound away at that one for awhile.
John, I'm thinking that i might just do that. I would still like to press out the king pins and replace them for confort sake. Are the parts easy to come by from parts stores? Also with the entire I beam set up, is it a straight forward swap?
Jim
Thats right, the one on heritage is orange, but the right side is just a spindle and the left side is pretty rusty. Its right on the end of the row, on the main road. Did you already get all the stuff off of the maroon one? They looked like they would be perfect, that truck was pretty fresh. Im going to keep my original I beams mainly beause its a little cheaper, plus the radius arms on the later trucks are really ugly.
John and I respectfully disagree on the I-beams...I found it far, far more trouble to replace them vs. just the spindles. That, and all I beams are not necessarily the same! My donor beams had a different 'arch' to them that made my truck bow-legged and I couldn't use them.
Chaser1602 basically told you how to get 'em out. Pound squarely on the kingpin...if your drift zings off sideways you can ruin the threads for the grease cap.
If you have a bottle jack with a small head on it, take that along also and try putting a 'push' on the kingpin from the bottom side and pound downward on the axle.
Well i decided to just remove the spindles. Went back today and whacked away for a while and got the spindles out. The drivers side took alot less persuasion.
Jim
I'm going to do the same thing soon, but should I use the newer I beams (77) or my 65 ones . I hear both sides to this and I am at a loss at what to do? Help me!
I'm a proponent of using the '65 parts.
If you decide to use the '77 arms, measure them first and make sure they have the same arch as your originals. It's hard to describe but not hard to do. Run a straight edge from the spindle end inward to a point on the I-beam, and measure the gap between your straight edge and the bottom of the I-beam. Do the same measurement on the donor beam. They should be very close, if not identical.
Thank's ddavidv I will use the 65 stuff and just take the 77 spindles, do you know if the drivers side engine perch (77, 351 ) will fit the 65 352 engine? I have read that it has to be changed because of the power steering box that I will also swap out.
I dont know about the diff. between 65 beams and 77 but that arch is in the beem cause that is how the alignment shop adjusts camber. They bend them to do that
Dwight, I'm not sure what caused your problem, this exchange has been discussed hundreds of times over the years. I read this site every day and that goes back beyond the 1999 join date shown on my profile. I have done this twice on chassis of my own, and it did not occure on mine. I do know the radius arms visually changed over the years, but as far as I know the measurements are the same from 65 to 79. I can't recall having king pins replaced in anything that I have owned or grew up with in over 50 years, and that is one reason I recommend changing the complete beam set. When changing the complete set you will always know what year parts to ask for should you need to replace a part.
For recommendation purposes, I am sticking to the whole setup swap.
