Alternator Operating Temperature
I've just had a new belt installed on my 03 F450 PSD ( along with a bunch of other parts) and after about 500 miles I'm still smelling burning rubber when I park. The smell was quite strong when I first got the truck back from the dealer and I assumed the belt was wearing-in, although I don't ever remember having to worry about a smelly belt before. One thing that I did notice is that the alternator heats up quite a bit when the truck has been runnning for a while. It gets uncomfortable warm after about 5 minutes at idle. I don't know if that's a normal operating temperature because I've never had cause to check it before I got this new belt. So if some of you could measure surface and internal temps on your alternators and report back to me, I'd sure appreciate it. I doubt this is a published Ford spec or I would try to look it up. I'm not getting any diagnostic errors and charging is in the 12.8 to 13.1 volt range.
