Black Soot

Is black soot in the tailpipe a bad thing or just an IDI thing? i know almost all diesel tailpipes have some, but how much is too much, and is that too much fuel?

The IDI does not have all the electronic things to adjust the fuel for every piston coming to TDC, so we have a little bit more soot at a lot less money...........

PLC has a good point but too much fuel is visible when you are working the engine and you cant see behind you due to black smoke. You should have a light haze from the tail pipe when working the engine.

he he, it's just getting good when you can't see behind you! and the soot in the pipe is a idi thing, if it comes out real shiny, like super black oil, then you should be concerned. that means the motor is using a LOT of oil. but you would notice that when you check the oil i would imagine. my truck has 330,000 miles and don't burn a drop. leaks like hell, but don't burn.
