How can I tell if my 7.3L Turbo is an IDI or a DI or a PSD??? Anyone know? It's a 1994 Crew cab Dually 2 wheel drv. with an E4OD auto the engine is Navistar.
i believe that in 94 they only made the idi trubo and that the di psd didnt come out unitl 95 year model. but if you want to look at your injector that will tell you, if you can see them then it is a idi. also i think that there is a cover on the front of the motor that says idi turbo or power stroke.
actually, i believe thay made all three... the idi, the idi turbo and the powderchoke.
i haven't even looked under the hood of a PSD, but i would think it'd have the PSD badges on the engine & the body, too.
you could always search for a vin decoder...
They made the IDI with a turbo until the spring of 94 and after that it was all DI Powerstrokes. The Powerstroke will have badges on the fender and plastic covers on the engine.
The idi engines all have a fuel system that has pressure lines to each cylinder that fire the injectors at approximately 1400 psi. The na 7.3 and the factory turbo 7.3 all have external fuel lines to each cylinder. The factory turbo engine has an air cleaner cover that says FORD turbo on it. This system was designed by ATS for ford. The aftermarket system, similar to ford factory system, says ATS turbo on it or whatever other manufacturer provided the system. The Power STroke engine has internal fuel rails to feed the injectors which fire at somewhere around 20, 000 psi using an external high pressure oil pump. Engine serial numbers are located on the top of the block, just to the drivers side of the injection pump about where the valley pan bolts to the block. Not sure of the alpha-numeric coding. I hope this explains what you are looking for.
With the auto tranny, its got not going to be a PSD. The 94.5 psd only came with the 5 spd. Also look at your 8th digit of your vin#. "F" is for the powerstroke. "K" is for the idi turbo. And "M" was for the idi NA. Also the 94.5 PSD will not have the Powerstroke badges. Mine just says "Turbo Diesel". But the easiest way as above stated is to look at the engine.

Reading this and then checking my VIN#.....my 8th letter is M.....what exactly is an IDI NA?......what motor (if any) are superior??
the 7.3 idi na is a non alcoholic engine.
actually its naturally aspirated (non turbocharged). this was used up to 94 model year engines when ford used the ATS turbo system design to put onto factory engines . it (factory) turbo has design changes that make the system user friendly in that it wont make enough turbo pressure to hurt anything. = no warranty problems ... supposedly. the 7.3 is a tuff old bird without a doubt. there are just some small design changes to make the model year different than previous. good maintainance program is good without doubt and also check coolant for pH. I've used Nalcool from caterpillar for years and it has helped keep the cooling system in check. Hope this helps.
NA= Naturally Aspirated. No turbo. The powerstroke is better power wise by far. But some will argue the IDI is better becuase of simplicity. But I got 275,000k miles on my powerstroke with no major problems.
Thanks Guys,
Yeah every bit of info helps. I do know this engine is in a good size work truck--F450 Superduty....stake/Dump with a dunbar crane. I would like to see it tach out a bit better, im at about 65mph @ 2700rpm.....oh well, it is just for work.....haha
