My friend has a 1985 F-150 which he has been working on for several months to no avail. He has a 302 automatic. I beleive it is throttle body injection. His problem is that when he first starts his motor it may run five minutes or an hour. Sometimes he will go to the store, cut the engine, come out of the store and it may not start. Wait an hour or so and it will start right up. It may stop after only a block or so and start right up again and then again maybe not. The only thing consistant about it is that it always starts up after it has set awhile. He has used starting fluid in the breather and that doesn't help. Tapped on wires, pulled and tucked for endless minutes. Replaced fuel pumps, filters etc. Anyone had this problem before?
I'm guessing the TFI module on the distributor needs replaced. Because of its location, it acts like a heat sink and is a common failure. Common symptoms are hot stalling/no start, then when it cools down it will allow the truck to start again.
The TFI module is known to cause the problem you describe !
As well as a bad connection.My85 EB had the same symtoms.I replaced the tfi still had some problems, turned out the pickup in the distibuter was bad.
