Hi everyone,I am having a cold start fast idle problem with my 91 aerostar.Does anyone have any thoughts to this problem?I call it a hunting idle. Thanks,John
If it just started happening, I would lean towards the IAC valve is sticking. Does it tend to rev a little, then drop in revs, then rev up again? Then definitely IAC.
If this always happened in cold weather, I would say it is your computer trying to warm up the engine to operating temperature.

Not sure if I am doing this correctly.Do you think if I put a heater in truck would that direct me to definite computer problem.Because it just happens on cold start. Also when I went to South Carolina for a week the problem went away and also was gone for a while when I got home. Also where could I get a computer cheaply if it is the problem.Thank for your help, John
If it is a 4.0L I would first try decarbonizing the intake (it tends to get build up of carbon from the EGR and PCV. That might also be an issue you are having if it high on miles. There has been a TSB about it for a couple years now and a quick search would find the how to.
Sense you mentioned that it did not do it in warmer climate I would also look into the temp sensor for the computer. The computer does not usually go out, just information going to the computer is incorrect and the computer does it best to manage the engine with that info.
BTW have you pulled codes on the truck? That might be useful too.

I am having a new problem with my 92 Ford Aerostar. On warm up it stalls sometimes and misses but then clears up almost like a flooded car. Then when it stalls it is hard to start.Wondering if this is an injector problem the car has 100,000 miles on it.But when it is running it runs great on the open road. When it goes to stall it seems like it is starving for fuel.Has anyone had this problem?I did replace the IAC.Thanks for your help.
Is this a newer Aerostar? Your first post lndicated a '91 model year but judging from your post it sounds like the same one, so I'll proceed on that basis.
If this problem suddenly appeared it may be a vacuum line problem (displaced/broken/leaking). If it has been getting steadily worse, the mass airflow (MAF) sensor may need cleaning or replacement. Injectors would be way down on my list of probable causes. If you are seeing a drastic drop in fuel economy and/or dark smoke from the exhaust it may be the fuel pressure regulator. And lastly, another common problem would be a failing oxygen sensor. At your mileage it has reached its expected lifespan.
100,000 miles is not that many for these engines. Most problems like this turn out to be something relatively simple to fix but exasperating to find.
John AERO, NIghthawk or anybody. Do you know what an approximate cost is for an IAC for a 3.0 V6? Does NAPA carry the part, or is it better to run a Motorcraft IAC? I'm thinking about getting a spare IAC, as with an '87 Aerostar, you never know what might go wrong on a old van. About 5 years ago, I was able to snag a R & L outside door latch, including a sliding door latch at an all- Ford car show and Drag race. $25 for all three latches, luckily I have not needed to use them, but have them in the garage if one breaks. My luck, the rear door will be the one to break, and i'll have to pay full price!! Anyway, what does an IAC run? How do you install it?

Ed, they run around $60 at Checker/Advance auto, I am pretty sure NAPA carries them, just don't know the price. Fairly easy to replace (a couple bolts), Just a little pIA to get to . Also make sure the engine bay is cool, don't want to make a trip to the ER.
