which tank should I use?

I purchased a 1986 F-150 that needs work. I ran it out of gas while trying to tune it. I got a can of gas and was pouring it into the tank, when I noticed another gas door closer to the rear. I have not noticed a switch for the tanks. What tank should I use?

there should be a switch somewhere inside the cab, maybe by the emergency brake release area . . or at least somewhere on the bottom half of the dash it probably looks like a toggle switch, look to see which tank it is switched to, whether it sayd 1 or 2 or front or rear, put it in that one. hope that helps

The tank fuel switch on 86 f-150 is located on the panel with the heat air controls

regardless, you could put a few gallons in each but try the front one first and try starting the truck, if that doesnt work well then obviously its the second tank. or just fill them both up and be safe

IF you can't find the switch, then it could be a aftermarket bed that is set up for dual tanks, and you may not have duel tanks. To find out, look under the truck and follow the filler tube (if their is a filler tube) from each door, and see if it leads to a tank. If your truck is not set up for dual tanks, then most likely the front filler tube would be the one that is connected to a tank, but make sure by looking under your truck like I said earlier.
