Hi everyone, my first post on this forum, I'm not an auto person so please bear with me. Just took of the tranny pan to replace gasket which was leaking tranny fluid (c4 tranny), I have a couple of questions.
1- how much tranny fluid should i put back in
2- do i put it all down the dispstick tube, is there another place it should go? 3- do's and don't's for this procedure
4- starting the motor
5- I am assuming it is leaking from the pan, what other places could it be leaking from?
Any help greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.
I don't remember the fill amounts right off the top of my head, but i THINK its about 7 quarts for a standard pan removal, and around 12 for a complete system refill....you can check with you'r local parts house and they can tell you for sure.
Second you do indeed add it through the dipstick tube.
do use a funnel, and don't rush....it'll take a little time, but you don't want to spill that stuff all over the engine and exhaust
check into the year and make sure you use the right fluid....older fords used type f and newer ones use dexron/mercon....you don't really want to mix these as it will cause foaming in the fluid....foam=bad news
once you get your fluid in just fire it up....nothing special here
the places your tranny can leak from are the pan gasket, front seal, rear seal, speedometer cable , dipstick tube, and vent tube.....there are a couple of others, but these are the most common places i've seen
Good on ya Max thanks for your help. Did what you said and all went smoothly, I replaced the pan gasket seal first as i thought it may be the culprit, haven't had it leak yet so i will keep my fingers crossed, if it does leak i will try your other suggestions, I have, however, noticed tranny fluid dripping (very very very slowly) from the selector (u will have to bear with my terms i don't know a thing about these trannies) arm that goes into the side (if looking at front of vehicle on your right hand side) could it be leaking out if there? I haven't noticed any fluid on the floor of my gagrage yet so i am reasonably confidemt i fixed the major leak. Thanks for your help, i have read your other posts and you are extremely knowledgeable with these trucks. Thanks mate.
