Front Driveshaft Question

I have a 79 F250 Supercab. I just found out the front driveshaft from the transfer case to the axle has to be rebuilt . I was wondering what other year driveshafts will work in my truck. I found one out of a 77 Bronco that looks the same. Will any 73 to 79 truck or Bronco work?

What most likely needs to be rebuilt is the CV joint (aka double carden). This is basically a pair of special U-joints . . . that's all there is to it. Even if you pull an identical front axle out of another vehicle you should replace this joint before you install it. Is a shop recommending this and if so what are they charging to do it?

There is a small shaft that sticks out of the driveshaft before the 2 U joints. It has needle bearings and a small ball that fits on it that allows the coupler to attach and move. The shaft is worn and needle bearings gone, ball is worn out of round. Im told they can rebuild the shaft, or cut the whole assembly off and weld on a new one. aproxx cost $200 to 250.

Sounds like way too much $$ to me. For $223 you can buy a brand spanken new shaft: http://www.napaonline.com/cgi-bin/nc...ng=drive+shaft You might also drop into Napa and see if they sell that shaft by itself. I'd bet they sell it as part of a u-joint kit. But as I said, if not just replace the whole shaft and be done with it.
