Built 460 Suggested Redline

Hey, got a question for you guys.
Im building a street/strip 460 for my mustang. Its got a stock crank and forged rods/pistons with floating wrist pins. Im more than likely going with a full roller setup for the valvetrain. Bearings are clevite 77 series. I also have a canton main girdle support and windage tray. Only have 2 bolt mains but i have arp fasteners for damn near every part of my motor. Bottom end is fully balanced as well. Sounds fairly friction free right?? What kind of redline would you push this motor to without being scared of breaking stuff. Im guessing about 6000 but ive never built a 460 so im asking the pros. This should be a 500+hp motor

do you have an 83 gt? i have one also. a 460 would kill the cars structure if you dont reinforce it. the 460 your building sounds like it would turn 6000 safe but its hard to say. find out where the power is max and rev it to that. unless its over 6000. i bet you wont have to go over 5600.

Our stock 460 goes to 6100 easy. Well it's pretty stock! Balanced bottom end, Clevite bearings, shot-peened rods, hyper... pistons, stock heads, 580lift cam, single plane manifold and 950 methanol carby, with collectors. (upside-down extractors)

Talking If the rods and pistons are good aftermarket units...

Thr rotating assembly will easily deal with 6500 RPM safely with ARP studs and a girdle/halo.

You do not mention cylinder heads. They will be your final determiner as to realistic RPM capability as will the intake manifold choice. Stock heads really start to fall off at about 5,000 RPM when the exhaust port becomes a turbulent bottleneck. If you have aluminum or good ported iron castings then you can cam for 6,500 and make good power.

A full solid roller set up is spendy but for a given duration figure it will make some 40 more HP or better with a good induction package including heads. The smallest comp solid roller will easily make 500 HP and more likely 550. It is the XR274R and has 236/242 duration @ .050" and mid .600" for lift. At your power level a dual plane intake like the RPM airgap or stealth std port would be great. The HP peak will occur at about 5,400 RPM. At 6,500 RPM with good heads and a victor intake you could make some 650 HP or better depending on port flow and tuning.

For a fox body to survive the torque subframe connectors are needed as is work the the trailing arm torque boxes.

Hope this helps some,

forgot to mention my intake/heads

i have a weiand tunnel ram with 2 holley 600 carbs and i have 99cc ported/polished iron heads, ill be making about 9.5:1 till i switch to some aluminum 75cc units, then ill be cranking 11.5:1. i dont suppose i could run on pump gas after that so untill i decide to go all out drag with it, im gonna run the low compression. i know i can make killer power with 9.5:1 if i get a good cam with it. redline will dictate what cam i pick. if i cant turn past say 6000 i shouldnt get a cam that goes farther than that. so......if i can go to 7000 i could get a 6500 cam and be just fine. at any rate, heads were ported and polished by my local head shop and i have 1.06int. 1.67exh. valves in them, larger than stock. thanks.
