I'm having some hesitation/fast idle/economy trouble with the stock 4bbl on my '84 351 HO. In the event that it can't be rebuilt, is a 570cfm carb enough? I've seen ads for Holley 570 cfm carbs for up to 300 hp. Mine is all stock, and staying that way, but I wonder if it's enough. Also curious about the electric choke. Do any of you guys have experience with the Holley replacements? Thanks!
The stock carb is a Holley (built for MotorCraft) #4180. I would suspect you have a worn accelerator pump along with a choke problem. My experience has been that if it's the original carb, and 20 years old, it's too worn out to rebuild. I installed a remanufactured #4180 purchased from O'Reilly Auto Parts. The cost was $250 compared to Ford's price of $750. I also had problems with my electric choke not working at times. The power lead comes from the back of the alternator, around the front of the motor to a relay on the driver's side, then over to the carb. (Not one of Ford's engineers' best minds at work that day!)The connection at the alternator is just a blade that sticks in a slot and would fall out, so I changed it to bolt to the alternator.
As far as the cfm's go, this is a 600 cfm unit. You should be O.K. with a 550 to 650 cfm model if you decide not to get a reman unit. I have not had any major problems with this carb, but it will have a stalling "fit" on cold mornings on rare occaisions.
If you want a good, reliable, easy to tune carb, you could switch to an Edelbrock 600 CFM unit. You can use the stock intake, air cleaner and EGR. I put one on my 86 F-250 with a 460 and removed the smog stuff and the 460 breathes a little easier now. I don't have any emmisions tests so I can get away with this, but if you live in an area that has smog tests, you won't be as lucky.
Yes, the Edelbrock parts # is 1406, that's the 600cfm with electric choke. If you have an auto tranny, you will need a kit to adapt the kickdown linkage from the carb.
In addition, I had some vacuum leak problems with my stock intake manifold, and replaced it with an Edelbrock Performer series, direct-replacement w/ EGR. Not only did it free up about half of all of those vacuum lines in front of the carb, it also felt like it helped the HP of the motor. The "shaker" induction mod is basically like running an open element air filter the way I have it set up, and that adds more airflow into the carb for extra power.
