Travel help needed ASAP!!

Hello all...need some travel advice. Driving from Orange County CA to Fort Dodge, Iowa. No issues until I get to Utah..then there are two ( or three ) options. MSN Maps said the quickest way is to take 15 to Salt Lake City...around Salt Lake to 80 then 80 to Wyoming...across Wyoming on 80, through Nebraska and finally into Iowa.

Another option I have ( possibly the safest for winter weather ) is 15 into Utah to 70 East through Utah to Colorado where I could continue on 70 Through Kansas all the way to Kansas City Mo, then North To iowa...or...

15 into Utah to 70 East through Utah to Colorado...then 70 to Denver Colorado....then hit 76 which travels NE where it meets back up with 80 in Nebraska.

Looking for opinions...hopefully one of you have taken these routes...please consider the seasons, road conditions, frigging snow...etc. Thanks for your help! I fly out of Omaha Neb Saturday morning and, if things go well will be driving a 77 F250 home! Photos of the grand trip will be posted!

All of your proposed routes are subject to some serious winter driving at this time of the year. From Utah driving east, I-70 is probably your best route, unless you are traveling on a weekend. The eastbound Sunday mountain slope-dope (skier) traffic tends to be very heavy, slow, and very stupid, especially if it is snowing. You might encounter stretches along these highways where the chain law is in effect. You either have chains or 4X4 with adequate tires, or you are stopped from traveling. I-70, I-80, as well as I-76 can be terrible with ground blizzards as well. I-80 through Wyoming into Nebraska is probably a bit worse than I-70 in this regard.

My suggestion, get up to date weather reports for your trip and make the decision on which route as you travel. All of these routes are fine in good weather. Eastern Colorado and Wyoming, as well as western Kansas and Nebraska can get very nasty with high winds blowing snow and creating absolute white out conditions. These routes can be extremely beautiful at this time of the year too.

Enjoy your trip, drive safe, DO plan well, and take some emergency supplies such as tire chains, flairs, small shovel, extra blanket or three, food, and plenty of water. When the highways close down, the available motel and hotel rooms become extremely scarce!

Rrikfish hit it right on the head!! If you are not stopping I'd go through Wyo. If you do plan a stop there are more, better places in Colorado.

76 takes you right by Cabela's which is a great diversion

The shortest route for you would be taking I70, but, be careful with Eisenhower Summit this time of year. Also gets really expensive for hotels in the mountains of CO. Dang yuppie skiers.
But it is a much more scenic route.

Long drive, I've gone from Washington to Iowa straight, not very fun.. anyways, I80 is probably fastest, but there's a lot of Semi traffic.

I've done the I-70/76/80 into Council Bluffs Iowa, took 10 hours from Denver on dry roads. Nice and easy, just watch your speed limits in Nebraska... Considering you plan on making this relatively quick, the roads on the East side of the hills should be pretty clear for you now.... Last time I went through Kansas, there was quite a bit of construction on I-70.

Good luck, --Mike

If you're coming from the west, I-80 would be the best and most traveled route, seems like it is always snowing on Eisenhouwer(I-70). When you get to Omaha I would cut north on I-680 to I-29, then pick up a good road up to Dodge. Not much construction on I-70 right now, they have quit for the winter, was in Denver last week with 18 wheeler. From Denver, went to Altoona, Ia and rolled right across I-80 without problems @75 mph( speed limit) while Kansas speed limit is 70 mph. Good luck and good weather!!!
