my last post was deleted or moved i think because i said i have an 84 and am in the wrong forum, problem is the guys in the forum for my year model don't know much about newer 5 speed manuals, what i am wanting to do is put a newer 5 speed behind my 300 I6 in my 84, it needs to be highway capable with 3.55 gears, not using an automatic that would kill my bone stock 145 horse engine, anyway what numbers or identifying marks would be on a 5 speed manual that would fit my truck,
Eric
p.s. i tried doing a search but not being an fte member i am not allowed to do a search in high load times, which is the only times i have open to be on the internet between work and everything else.
I believe there is a transmission forum, maybe your post was moved there.
later year manual transmissions compatible with your 300 engine.... essentially any of the small-block trannys will do. The Mazda 5-sp is found in broncos and F150s and maybe half of the F250's out there, and the ZF 5-sp, a significantly more robust transmission, was in F250's and F350's and some F450's. its a beefy tranny, and more expensive new, used, rebuilt or from a junkyard typically.
Either would suit you find, msot of the F-series in the 90's could have been had with 3.55 gears and had one or the other, so no worries there.
My 93 F350 longbed crewcab has the 5-sp ZF and 3.55 gears and a 351W smallblock.
Ugh. Make sure you get a warranty. Those trannies are known to leak oil from the top, and they also have a weak reputation. Bellhousing pattern won't be an issue, as they were only made for the 300 & 302.
thanks for that bit of advice i put a thread on the tranny forum for any comment good or bad on the mazda tranny, if i hear a lot of bad things i will buy a zf
There is nothing wrong with the M5OD. I have way over 200,000 miles on mine now and its going strong. I have a built 302 and pull trailes also. So the crap these guys are talking is just that! CRAP! Every time I read this I see it but everyone keeps saying I have heard. Well I know. Mine is great!

I agree,my 89 with 275,000 moles on it ran trouble free,my 93 with 112000 also runs trouble free basicly,it shifts hard into second gear on extremely cold mornings a coupla miles down the road after it gets warmed up I have no problem the rest of the day. Hugh
