leaking axle

Hi, I have a 98' Ranger 2.5l 2wd. when I checked my brakes in the rear I noticed some oil leaking from the axle. My dad thought I should get new a new bearing and a seal, but the guy I talked to at Advance Auto parts thinks I just need the seal. He said I should only need new bearings if it makes noise(makes no noticable noise). What do you guys think? I don't want to do the bearings unless I have to. Its not a lot of oil, but I do have inspection this month so I gotta get it taken care of. I also have not figured my ring gear size. its axle code 86 3.73 non-limited slip, but i havn't found my ring gear. I really think its 8.8 but I want to be sure. Is there anyplace i can find this(other than taking the cover off and measuring the gear). thanks

There should be a tag on the differential with some numbers on it, the ring gear size is one of the numbers, it will say 8.8 or 7.5.

Just do the seal.
