ok yesterday i go out to my 1993 ford exploorer to start it up and go to the store. on my way to the store it starts making this really loud noise. like metal slapping together. so we got to leave from the store i get in it and it starts making that noise again. i take it out onto a main road and get it up to 50 and the noise goes away. while all this was happening there was no loss of power and it idled fine. now i get up that night to go to work and start it up and it starts making that noise again. i go to get on the interstate and it starts shaking and then i here a loud sound. the motor keeps running but it isn' t pushing the truck down the road. now i pull over and call a tow truck and then it stalls. now it won't start at all. any ideas?
assuming you mean the timing chain as fan belt is out in the open. there should be, but I'm not that familiar with the OHV engine. hopefully others will respond shortly.
ok thanks but it turned out to be the flywheel. now i've got another problem, the trans won't shift. when i put it in drive it won't shift out of first. then when i try to shift it manually it won't shift out of second. what do you guys think? any advice would and will be greatly appreciated.
If the flywheel broke (and from your descriptions it did) it could have caused the torque converter innards to be damaged (or the front pump of the transmission). In either case, the damage probably sent debris thruought the transmission and is causing the shifting issues. Unfortunately, you will probably need to do a complete rebuild on the transmission along with a new (re-manufactured) torque converter.
