Hi i've been following this board for a while now untill i recently decided to register and post. I have a 2000 excursion with a v10 that was stock except for a K&N filter untill yesterday.
Anyways, i just sent it to the shop for a 5 inch superlift install, and a new set of 20 inch rims and 325/60-20 tires.
What gear ratio do i have stock and what would be the best gears to install. I mostly drive on the highway and run out of gear quick. My tach is about 2500 rpms @ 70 mph, i would like to drop that down to about 2K rpms at 70 mph. What would be the best gears to run now with the new wheels. Acceleration should not be an issue i have a supercharger install scheduled for next week.
I think the only rear end offered in the X was a 3.73.
When you put the larger tires on it as compared to stock you will drop the effective axel ratio. usually you have to change to a taller gear to keep the towing and get-up. If you don't change gearing your engine will turn slower at the same rpm as before only you speedo will be off also.
The higher (numerically) the gear ratio, the smaller (physically) the ring gear & pinion get.
My X seems fine with 35's & the 4.3 gears on the street/highway. Steep 4xlo is the only time I've personally wished for a lower gear (I wish the t-case was a 4:1 ratio).

Just a few minor corrections so that the record can be straight.
2 gear sets were available for the V10 Excursion.
3.73 & 4.30
It sounds like you have 4.30s IF the RPM & Speed you said was for the stock tires. (Before Lift) Right now you should be right around 2200RPM @ 75mph in OD.
You effectively changed your final drive to almost equal a stock Excursion with 3.73s.
If you are happy with the performance, then I'd keep the 1500 or so dollars in your wallet and forgo getting gears.

It may have been a typo but what I italicized in your quote is not possible. Maybe you meant MPH instead of RPM?
As far as the speed...there are tuners out there that can change that easily.
Thanks for the info guys. I guess i won't be changing the gears after all. I will get the truck back tomorrow afternoon and the new wheels will go on on monday. I'll take my laptop and verify my speed by gps.
PS how so you go about posting attachments (pictures) it says i may not do that. I wanted to post before and after pics.

Only the later speedos with the digital odometers are able to be recalibrated, tuner-wise. His '00 is not.
Currently NO tuner will correct the speedo on any year version of the SuperDuty or Excursion line of vehicles. The dealer can correct the PCM up to 35" tires, any larger you will need the TRU-SPEED convertor.
My post was based on info provided by Super Chips. A guy named 'Al' that I talked to said that the OD's that are digital can be recal'd. This was early-on when the 1714's were first intro'd.
I see the 6.8's are not able to be recal'd according to the list of features on their web site. They must have found that it didn't work.
