4WD not engaging.....
Hi I'm new here, so please forgive any newbie mistakes. I have a 1996 F150 XLT w./ approx. 96K miles, that I've owned since 1998 with really no problems (except some auto locking hub problems right when I bought it, I replaced them w./Warn manual locking units) until this morning. We got some snow this morning and so I followed my usual routine, lock the hubs, back out of the driveway, get the wheels pointing straight, and hit the "4x4" button.
The 4x4 indicator light when on, I heard the usual 3 clicks that take place after hitting the button, and nothing, no four wheel drive. I double checked the hubs, tried a few more times (the indicator light, and familiar clicks happening) still nothing. I took a quick look underneath to look for something obvious like a loose or disconnected wire, front drive shaft problem, and all looked normal.
We've been getting a lot of snow and I used the 4WD with no problems less than a week ago. Does this sound like a control module gone south? I'm not too familiar with how the electronic shifts work, since it's never given me a problem. Is there a solenoid that might be sticking? Is it external or internal? I have a Chilton's manual, but it doesn't have much in it for troubleshooting. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I really like, and want to keep this truck, and I don't want to get soaked at a dealership if it is something I can fix myself. (Yes, I have a measure of mechanical apptitude).
Thanks,
Eric
