First Oil change - when???

OK - Ford manual says to change engine oil every 7500 miles (based on normal use). I basically don't pull much of anything until summer. I've just went over 3600 miles. When should I get my first oil change? Did I pass it and should've went in at 3000, or 5000 or should I go as the manual says and wait until 7500??? seems high, but I've never owned a diesel before...
Thanks all!

superPSD

My dealer wanted me in there at 3k, but I did it at 800 to get the oil & any debri from mfg out of engine. I think that 3k is what they recommend for first oil change. If you drive in large city w/lots of stop & go driving you might go as low as 3k for every change. read further in book or search here for info, lots around.

On both my 03 and now on my 05, dealer recommended first change at 3000 miles. I just did mine last night a 2926 miles. As far a later changes are concerned, read the owners manual, it pretty much specifies what conditions warrant more frequent changes. Unless you are using your truck in over the hiway hauling only, you will probably find you fall into an early change scenario, every 5000 miles. To overide this, save me some money, save me some work, and, help save our environment, I use an oil that includes oil analysis as part of the program. My plan is to check the oil @ 3000, 5000, and every 1500 miles after that until the test reports come back indicating declineing additive package, or contaminents are becoming noticeable. Due to injector failure on the 03, I never ran more than 5000 miles. Hopefully on the 05, that will not be an issue.

Remember, the only thing it hurts to change it more frequently is your wallet, the enviroment, and your time.

SuperPSD, I did mine at 3,500. Since, I do them every 5,000 miles. I do not tow or do anything extreme, I just change at 5,000 to be safe. Plus, I'm a freak, I enjoy any excuse to get under the truck.

There are several posts on this already but I will add my 02 cents again. I start thinking about it at 3000. That way it is somewhere between 4 and 5000 when I actually get it done.

Thanks for the info guys - I too have been thinking about it since 3000 - I'll probably head in next week, so it will be right around the 4000 mile mark - Plus, my first oil change is a freebie!!!

IMO, your first one should be done on or before 3000 miles just to get the "new" truck metal shavings out that are typically associated with a new vehicle.

Just my 2 cents as well, but I was told by the srevice manager at the dealership that about every 5000 miles is what is usually recommended.

Oil changes are like tak'n a bath.. Everyone knows its twice a month, and once a week in 'severe' conditions, but is a personal choice like oil changes.. Dealers here give the first oil change FREE at 3K.. A good way to get you in the habit of returning to them for service.. Oil/changes are easy and cheap (sorta) especially if you do them yourself.. I dumped mine at 2K when the Predator was installed.. Over kill probably, but was a bit surprised at the amount of 'glitter" in the oil filter housing.. Just break in pieces, but was glad to see'm go.. Follow your dealer/handbook recomendations, see if you can get the dealer to pay for the first one, and if you slip in an extra change or two, nobody ever hurt an engine from over service
