3 Speed Overdrive Input Shaft

Posted this over in the Transmission forum but didn't get any responses. I'll try here.

I've got a '59 Pickup with the 3 speed overdrive trans (T89?). It has the 1-3/8 input shaft size. I lost the reverse and cluster gear in it. I've got a possible line on the same transmission but it's from a car (1-1/8 input shaft size). Is it possible to just remove the input shaft from the truck trans and install it into the car trans?

What do you mean by "3-speed overdrive" trans; the three speed Ford/B-W trans with the separate B-W OD unit behind? I believe I have a good Y-block trans of this vintage, and may not need the 3-sp parts other than the output shaft. Email me

Ross-The trans I have is a T89 with a R10 OD bolted on. Is that the trans pictured in your gallery the one you would sell? It's different than the one I have. Mine is a toploader. I think you is like a T86. I don't have my notes with me so I might be screwing up my model numbers.

If your replacement transmission is the same size (except the input shaft), why not use it by changing your clutch disk to match?

Spitfire I had the same trns in my 59. I also had the same problem I think. It would jump out of first just before shifting RPM and would bang a couple of teeth off reverse or the cluster or both. If that is the case you need to replace the input shaft anyway. What has happened is the bore for the intermedeate bearing is worn out. This will allow the main shaft to flex enough to pop out of gear at high RPM. I replaced the cluster gear twice and put new bearings in it and it still would jump out of first. I ended up putting a 3spd toploader and 3.00:1 gears in it. I discovered the fix after the retrofit. Good Luck, Rich.

I'm just past quite the puzzlefutz, trying to determine the interchange options between a Car 3 spd. O/D and the Truck 3 spd. O/D. The further I investigated the less likely it looked. I also was investigating swapping out the input shaft. I finally found another 3 spd. O/D Tranny. For full discussion check in the y-block forum the last 10 days. Here's alittle data I saved, if it helps.

Hey Cobraguy, Since I'm committed to this old tranny, was the "worn out bore for the intermediate bearing" repairable?

The truck 3sp OD trans has the number/letter 3T and possibly an A painted to the top of the main gear box.

The strongest OD bos was the T89 3sp with the R11 BW OD. These were stronger than the weaker R7. Check out a Hollanders to see this.
The T89 truck and T85 car boxes were similar, but the truck T89 has straight cut spur gears for 1st and reverse, whereas the T85 gears are helical on 1st and reverse. The T10 4sp is based on this same case, with 1st taking the reverse spot and reverse being moved into the tailhousing.

Input shaft length:
car: 6.5"
trucks, 65 and up: 6.5"
trucks, up to 64 (with motor mounts on bellhousing):7.125"
Input shaft dia:
cars: 1.0625"
trucks: 1.375
Bellhousing input bearing retainer hole:
cars: 4.85"
older cars & 64 - earlier trucks with car based trans: 4.675"
trucks with T98 4sp & old T87 HD 3sp 5.125"
