Pyro - Pre or Post

I'm installing a turbo system on my 7.3. My question is - what tempurture reading for heat should i use on a pre turbo pyro compared to a post turbo. My turbo has a factory location pre turbo (1" - 2" away from exhaust intake turbo mouth) Thanks. Joe

I have read on this board that the temp diff is about 300 degrees between placing the pyro before the turbo or after the turbo.

Pre turbo will show hotter, of course.
On the stock Factory Ford turbo, I have yet to exceed 1050 on the pyro mounted pre turbo. And I sure was trying. No fuel turned up.

1050 at the pre turbo mount of the "stinger". This is the temp suggestion by ATS turbochargers who designed the system for Ford at the factory and also made their own system for aftermarket. They completed extensive testing and determined that the 1050 will provide a sustained durability factor in the operation of the turbocharged 7.3 engine. That number was set up because John Q PUblic didnt understand the function and operation of the turbocharger and what happens inside the engine when a turbo is installed. SO, 1050 maximum sustained temp - pre turbo unless you have dealt with the systems before and know what you are watching for. If you see in the rear view mirror one piston come out of the exhaust pipe, thats a good sign its too hot. Enjoy your ride. bilder12 ... OUT

I have mine in the exhaust manifold drivers side right above where the exhaust pipe attaches. As close to the cylinder as I can get it.
Pistons start to melt at 1250 and that is what you want to protect.
I keep mine under 1100 for a safety factor, pistons cost a lot to replace.

Builder you can't see the pistons come out the pipe cause they just drip away....Laughing...

hey dave - how'd you get it in the manifold? that's what i was thinking at first, but now realize that cast is such & PITA to drill & tap, and even less fun to weld. is there an easy way i haven't heard of? oe threads somewhere?
i've been told that most pyro mfr's have a weld-in bung... just drill the pipe real close to the manifold flange & you're golden.
oh, & bilder: funny stuff... what do i do when i install the stacks, though? i bet that piston would shoot straight up in the air! at 70 mph, by the time it comes back to earth, i'll be in flames & on the evening choppercam news

The motor was sitting on the floor when I drilled and tapped.
Straight in from the side was the only place I could get enough room for the thermocouple in the manifold.
You could pull the manifold off to do it, plus you do not have to worry about metal shavings in the turbo then.

Well it is snowing hard outside now, so I better go to bed, gotta get up at 3:30 to go plow.

for mileage i keep mine as low as i can get it, but if i want i can run mine up to 12 pounds, i turned up the waste gate. at 65 i get about 5 or so pounds. at 60 i get about 2-3 pounds. enjoy the turbo just be carefull, if you have a 5 speed you can slip the clutch with to much power if you turn it up to high.

On the factory turbo, I max out at exactly 7 psi.

Have not had any time to make changes, just dreaming about them...

For max fuel mileage use the pyrometer, not the boost guage.
If you keep the EGT close to 600 degrees pre turbo you will get the best mileage.

I live in a bad place to try that, I am either going up a mountain and EGT is higher.
Or I am going down one and it is way lower.
