Hi I just got a 97 F-150 XLT with the triton v8 engine 4.6L. I had the truck for 3 months and only yesterday I parked it to go in the house for a few minutes. I came back out and it won't start. When you turn the key, you hear the starter click, but it doesn't start at all. I tried hitting the starter and had my cousin turning the key at the same time and still doesn't start. The battery is fully charged. What is the problem and what should I do?
I'll stop it and go inside for 30 mins or so, then go outside and when I turn the keys, all I get is a 'plunk' sound. I know it has lots juice in the new battery I put in...but sounds like the starter is not engaging. Then I'll start fiddling with all kind of things like making sure the hoods closed properly, or passenger doors, and turning the remote locks off and on....not sure what does it, but it eventually cranks.
It sounds like both of you probably need new starters but first you should carefully check the wiring to them. The terminals on the cables sometimes corrode and break off.
i had the same thing happen last year. it would eventually start after you tried it enough times...then one day it just quit starting at all. it was the starter. replaced it and all was well. not to bad of a job to do yourself except for reaching one of the top bolts is a little challenging. I got to it through the pass fender well. good luck and always check the wiring to the starter. that red wire that is attached via male/female is prone to come off.
I had the same thing too, When I removed the starter the ground wire that goes from the soleniod to the starter case burned in half. Starter was still good. All symptoms made it look like something else though.
