Column shift collar. Mine is worn. Fix or replace?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 30-Aug-02 AT 04:12 AM (EST)]I have an 85 F250 with an auto. The holes in the shift collar for the little roll pin that sticks through the shift handle that the shift lever pivots on (when you pull it toward you to release it from Park) is badly worn to the point the lever 'jiggles' a lot and it bugs the crapp out of me when I have to move the lever.

I'm sure that this is a common problem for these trucks. Come to think of it, I think that my old 67 country sedan (now long deceased) had the same problem. Is there a slick way of fixing this or do I have to replace the collar? Is there a cool aftermarket one out there? (just the collar, not a whole collumn)

I'm thinking that it should work to just drill over-sized through both the collar and the lever and replace the pin with a larger one.

Has anyone delt with this situation before?

One more thing. If I just drill out the hole and replace the role pin with a larger one, I would guess that the same thing would happen again.

Any Help? thanks

It's fairly simple R & R this collar.
I've done it numerous times on other people's trucks.

One suggestion :
Get the piece and restore it as soon as possible so as to allow the paint harden for a while (weeks /months)before installing.

Column shift collar. Mine is worn. Fix or replace?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 31-Aug-02 AT 00:07 AM (EST)]Thank you for the response. One more thing. Is there a way to prevent this in the future? It seems to me that it's a design flaw to have the soft casting of the collar take the brunt of the force from the pin. My friends truck (an 80 F350 4x4) has the same problem. He just has a small bolt going through it with a nut on the other side so he doen't have to tap the pin back in as it trys to wiggle out but the lever is still loose.

Again, thank you for your help. This site is just too cool. I wish that it was here back in the late 80's early 90's when I was into the attempted lift and transmission conversion work on my truck. Id love to get my truck back into good shape again and this site could really get me motivated again.

Your 2 cents are appreciated...

P.S. My column is standard black. Does the part come unpainted?

The last one that I bought from Ford was grey Primer.

Ready for this ?

The exact matching paint for restoration is called "Sparkling Black".

I posted a thread in the apperance forum about it.

The main reason for this pin area to wear out is the slap shifting into gear, rather than a smooth movement of the shifter arm.

Ok. I'm ordering it ASAP. I'll also see if a local Ford shop has a paint job coming up using that paint.

... sparkling black, huh...?

Thanks for the info.
