I haven't posted in a while but thought that I would put this out there. I have recently purchased an '04 Explorer Limited, V8, Auto, 4X4. We have just reached 6,000 miles and there started a shudder in the steering wheel. It seems like the Power steering pump was going bad or the 4X4 was engaged. It only did it when at low speed turns into lots or spaces. At highway speeds it was fine. I called the local dealer where we purchased the car and he said to bring it in. We took it the next day and during the test ride he said it was the clutch pack in the rearend and that this was common and not a problem to fix. Picked up the car the next day the service tech said it wasn't the clutch pack and that there was a service bullitin put out that took care of the problem (he was right, so far). He performed TSB #04-26-08 reprogrammed PCM. It's been a week and no problems.
We have a '96 Explorer that we bought new and now has 97,000 miles and has been a good car. I have never heard of the clutch pack problem and evidently it wasn't the problem this time either. Hope this helps someone out!

Some 2004-2005 Explorer/Mountaineer 4x4 vehicles built before 12/13/2004 may exhibit an increased effort while turning, during low speed sharp turning maneuvers. This condition may be due to false 4x4 system engagement.
ACTION:
Refer to the following Service Procedure to diagnose and repair the vehicle.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
Verify the condition and monitor the transfer case clutch duty cycle PID (PWM).
NOTE: MONITOR THE PID MULTIPLE TIMES TO VERIFY CONDITION. THE SCAN TOOL MAY MISS THE CLUTCH DUTY CYCLE SPIKE.
