Tranny Problems
I have a 1980 F-350 with a 400 in it. The tranny that I am trying to put in it is a C-6 out of a 1977 F-150. My problem is when I bolt them together they bind up and it wont turn over but when I put about a 1/4 in to 1/2 in of space between the bell housing and the block the engine turns over nicely.

Check the spec on the length of the input shaft on the C-6 transmission. I couldn't see this being different but it is worth a shot. I have seen this happen before I actually have it written down in my book, I ussually log everything let me check into it for you.

what engine did the C-6 come off of? if it was a 429 or 460 it will work with that engine (bolt up) but the flywheel may be too big. if it was from another 400 the torque converter may not be in all the way and allowing it to bind up the input shaft on the trans when everything is snug.

The engine that this C-6 came off of was a 400. I tried using my torque converter out of my tranny but it bound up. Then I swapped it with the torque converter out of this tranny. I am gettin really mad now. I have been dealin with this problem for almost a month now.

you do not have the torque all the way in. i have done this years ago, and found out the hard way. the torque should start back, then go one more notch with some turning. if you can get your fingers behind the torque it is not all the way in. you will be very lucky if the front pump is not damaged.

Thanks for all of the help guys. I will try this tomorrow when I go to work on it. I hope the pump isn't bad. If it is how do u tell that it is bad.Chris

You may have to go to a trans parts place. Fords have a ton of flywheel combos. So many theres a book of pictures of them. They have tiny bends in them and differant looks. Did you have a c-6 in there with a 400 1st? if you had a differant trans then a c-6 comming out then chances are you need the right flywheel.

look at the torque housing where it slides into the tranny. if it has any metal on it, look into the tranny and see if the bushing is pushed back, or if it is bent or twisted. i have seen this many times on fords. some times you can have a tranny shop replace the bushing. other times the pump housing will be busted.
