My 02 will shift into 4hi without a hitch but it will not engage into 4lo at all. I have tried everything. The hubs engage in 4hi and works great. Could the switch be bad or is something else the culprit?
are you following the procedure exactly, there was a post a while ago, make sure you are on the brakes when engaging, the 4lo is connected to the pedal won't engage without the brakes on.
Foot does not have to be on brake, truck just has to be in neutral and stopped. I put mine in 4-low all the time, just put it in neutral and pull it on back, do have to tug on it a little to get it all the way back to 4-low...
I had the contacts in my switch get dirty once, it would go in to 4lo and back to 4hi then in again and ect...... about every second or so. I popped the switch out and took it apart and cleaned the contacts and it works great now. Not saying that is your issue but worth a try. There is also 2 30amp relays that control the 4wd up by the brake master cylinter under a black cover. One is for 4hi and one is for 4lo, I pulled mine out and cleaned the 5 spades(pins) with my pocket knife. While I was doing all of this I went ahead and pulled my 2 plugs off of my T-case motor and sprayed some electronics cleaner in them, wouldn't hurt to clean those also. good luck
Also do a search on ESOF in this forum, I can't remember but I think it was big orn that had a very detailed post about ESOF with even the relay #'s.
They sell those relays at your local autoparts stores,(I believe they are just plain old 30A relays) I don't know how well you are versed with electronics but you could test them(kind of a pain) or just by a couple new ones.

Thanks a million... I cleaned the fuses and like magic it switched into 4lo perfect everytime!!! Saved me a big headache and probably a few $$$ at the repair shop..
Also, don't forget that with a manual trans. you have to have the clutch pushed down in order to go into 4-Lo. I'm just glad that I read the manual before I went and complained to the dealer!

Glad to hear that it is working for you now stealth. Maybe the 4lo relay just had a bad connection. You don't have too but I also wouldn't hesitate to pop off you plugs on your Transfer case and spray some cleaner if you can locate them. They are kind of a pain if you have the off road package because of the skid plate, but not horrible. I had minimal dirt in mine after 100,000 miles because they have them sealed pretty good but I thought it wouldn't hurt to clean them anyway(too much time on my hands I guess, he he). My switch must have had a bit too much contact grease or something, just wiped the contacts a bit and away we went.
