I have a 1990, 2.3 standard tranny 2wd ranger. I used to get almost 20 mpg. Now i get 14. What happened!! the check engine light used to blink, now it comes on every now and then. I put a code reader on the truck and it said i had trouble with the ect, and egr valve opening detection. I just replaced the ect back in july and i took the egr apart and cleaned it completly. I've replaced the HEGO, ACT, and EVP. I hate to think its the MAP or EGR valve and spend more money on it than i already have. Its getting expensive. I replaced the head gasket 2 months ago and it didn't get this bad after i replaced it. The engine doesn't seem to be idling rough. Any help or ideas?

What exactly was the code number? Your truck should not have a MAP sensor - at least the 4-cylinder ones we have do not.
Have had the EGR chamber in the intake manifold get carboned up. That usually causes the trucks to "ping" as the insufficient flow from the EGR raises the combustion temperature.
Let us know what the code was/is and we will go from there.
I read the code with a analog volt meter after i found out how to do it from a haynes manual. I'm pretty sure it flashed 11 twice, then I got 41? or 14 twice. It seemed a little hard to follow. Does it always send codes twice or am i reading it wrong? Also, I noticed the the battery voltage charge guauge on the inside of cab seemed higher than normal. I put a volt meter on the battery with engine running and it is about 15.25 volts. Is that too high?

What can I do with the dpfe? Can i clean it? I changed the t stat a month ago. I live in northern MI and it got up to the high of about 5 degrees yesturday. Maybe killed the mpgs. Someone told me tonight that a clogged fuel filter would kill my milage. I never had the engine die at high speeds. could it still be bad?
