shift lever won't move
I have a 98 Ranger 4x4, 4.0 liter engine, standard transmission with approximately 80,000 miles. My problem is when i start out in the morning for the first time the gear shift lever doesn't want allow me to shift into a gear. Sometimes it takes several tries to get the lever to shift into gear. I sometimes try all gears before finally getting the transmission to shift to a gear. I can then shift to first. It seems it is almost always when the truck has set overnight and the weather is cooler. After i drive for a few miles and shift a few times the problem seems to go away.

Can you shift throught the gears with the engine off? If so, it is probably a problem with the clutch master cylinder or the slave. Have you tried pumping the clutch a few times to see if that makes a difference? Is the clutch making noises when you shift?

No, the lever won't move to any gear at all the engine off. I have not tried pumping the clutch. I do try to move the shift lever and push in the clutch while i try this. I can leave home and drive about a block to the first stop sign and can't shift when i try to shift to first--or any other gear. After trying for maybe 30 seconds to a minute i can get it to shift. Kind of an empty feeling setting at the sign with folks behind.

have you tried bleeding the clutch? moisture can get in the clutch fluid and turn it to paste.
also, hows the fluid level in the tranny? should be at the bottom of the fill hole.
