5.4L Extremely Rough idle, Shutters when accelerating-HELP!
I have a 98 F-150 with 98,000 miles. Bought it with 50,000 miles and I have never had any trouble until last night on the way home when all of the sudden when I would step on the accelerator it would shutter. When in idle it runs extremely rough, entire truck shakes, but does not die. In park, when I step on the acceletor it shutters in low rpm's then runs fine in high rpm's. Any ides of the the problem?
I grew up around older vehicles that you could work on, and to me it sounds like timing, spark plugs or carb needs adjustment, but with new trucks I need lots of help.
It sounds as though one of the coils is bad. The 5.4L has individual coils on each spark plug. Is the check engine light on? You may have to take it in to the dealer to have the computer scanned.
It is due for a tune-up anyway. Install new Motorcraft or Autolite Double platinum plugs. If the MIL is lit, a quick scan will tell you which cylinder is misfiring.
Mine did the same thing. Turned out to be the EGR valve. They cost about $75 everywhere I checked. One way to check...remove the EGR vavle and cover the throttle body intake and exhaust tube hole with your hands, while an assistance starts your truck. Make sure you have a good seal to avoid vaccum leaks. If your truck runs fine, you know it is the EGR. Worked for me.
jrode, Many things could give the symptoms you're describing. A coil pack seems unlikely because the engine ran fine as the RPMs picked up. The EGR is likely. A big vacuum leak is likely. I wouldn't run out and buy parts until I knew what it was. If I couldn't determine what it was, I'd get it diagnosed.
I was having a very similar problem with my 2001 F250 5.4, I thought my trans was shot for sure. Then a friend suggested putting a fuel system antifreeze and cleaner in the fuel. So I put a bottle of Prestone Cold Start in the tank and the problem cleared up with in 5 miles of driving. I am also going to change the fuel filter tomorrow, and probably plugs as well.
I hope this helps you, Pete
