I have found that my torque coverter seems to lock and unlock a little more than I would like, seems more than normal but I haven't driven an auto in a few years. The truck is a 2001 F150 with the 4.6L and the automatic. I have had the tranny checked out and flushed, and they said the tranny itself is fine.
They also said the TPS going bad (may not be bad enough to throw a code) could cause the torque converter to do this. It is not shifting down a full gear, as I have been watching the RPM's to see where they are sitting when it does jump.
It is on hills and stuff when the RPM's are below 2000 to start or if I am sitting about 55mph (1500rpms) and give it gas to speed up (not stepping on it hard). Could the TPS cause or do these trannys lock and unlock or am I just paraniod? If not the TPS, is there anything I can do to prevent the locking and unlocking as much or is this normal?
The gas mileage doesn't seem to change from it locking and unlocking and I it just bugs me more than anything else.

It sounds like normal transmission operation to me. When you are driving down the road at highway speeds and come on a slight grade or headwind, OD will go in and out depending on resistence, condition, throttle position and trans/engine temp. Try turning off the OD button next drive and see if the change is the same. The torque converter will lock and unlock depending on these same conditions. If it is the converter, the rpms should change about 200-300 and if it is the OD the rpms will change about 500-600.
