Hey guys, I own a few late 80's ford trucks and am a ford man till death, but as time goes on, a guy has to upgrade! I am looking at a 1997 ford 4x4 supercab shortbox with a 4.6 in it. Now heres where my question comes in. The dealer I am looking at this truck from is notorious for the ol odometer rewind trick. Now I know a guy should stay away from a dealer like this, but a beautiful ford is a beautiful ford, no matter who sells it! Anyways, I was wondering, if they did a odometer rewind, would one be able to tell? would the truck run any different? Ive heard a few guys say a person can reset the computer on these trucks so a guy would never know if the odometer was rewound, and ive checked the vin number out and there seems to be no record of the mileage. Any help that anyone can give me would be awesome, thanks alot!
from what i was told in models of that year and older, there is a strap/tape over the odometer numbers, when you pull the dash out, if the numbers where tampered with the tape will be ripped/removed. I would say check for signs that the dash was removed.
Ask to see the title before you buy the truck, most states have the mileage on the title at the last sale. Get the previous owner's name and address from the title and do some research. If the dealer won't show you the title, shop elsewhere. You are buying the title as well as the truck, know what you are buying. Check the inspection sticker if there is one on the truck, some states record the mileage at each inspection, get the name of the inspection station off the sticker if possible. It would be ashamed to buy a 214,000 mile polish job.
Guage clusters can be exhanged between these trucks and the milage can be chaged. For example you got a wrecked low milage truck and a high milage truck that looks good. Swap clusters and it appears you are getting a good looking low milage truck. Why are you helping this guy stay in buissness if he is "known" to do this to customers? Keep looking and maybe get something a little newer if possible (99+).
yeah i hear what you guys are saying, and as the saying goes, if something is too good to be true, it probably is, just wanted to get other opinions and to see if there was a way to check, I also live in canada, and here you cant get record of previous owners, unless you happen to stumble upon them, but thanks again all of you guys for your info and opinions!
