Just picked up a digital clock for my 86. Truck has factory gauges, no tach, but I figure the plug will be in the harness. My question is how much of the trim panel do I need to trim for the clock. It does go above the radio, right?Does anybody have a picture they can post of a factory clock and trim panel?
I believe as long as your truck came with a radio, you have the open connector for the clock. It is locatated on the right side of the ash tray, just under the dash.
It does go just above the radio, held in by three screws. I was luck to get the bezel with it, already cut out but it would be easy to do. Just cut around the three windows molded into the bezel. I'll take a pic and try to post it tomorrow.
MSC, I haven't had a chance to get back to the truck to take a pic. It's been extemely cold and lots of snow over the past few days. I will be getting the truck going on the weekend, and I'll take the pic then.
For clocks, keep an eye out in the bone yards. I've been able to snag a couple for my fleet.
Well I tried to install the clock today. Found the harness on the r/s of the ash tray. But I didn't get the piece of wiring harness that goes from the clock to the main harness. The main plug is empty, Can anyone help me out here. There isn't a you pick it salvage yard in my area. The only yard local is very small, they don't have much in their yard. All newer stuff, since their so small.
I put one in my truck. As you mentioned you need the other harness that goes from the clock to the plug. I didn't have one at the time, so I made one. It was easy. I found the color codes in my service manual, and used a test light at the plug to tell what was what.
Just cut out the three squares in the top of the radio bezel. Try to leave the two little posts for an oem look, but you could probably cut those right out and it would look fine. I used a small coping saw and smoothed them with sandpaper. A dremel seemed a little too powerful, like you could ruin it too easily if you weren't very careful.
nickmobil67,
Trimming the bezel was easy, used my dremel and left posts. Came out fine.
Like you did, I looked in my ford shop manual and figuerd out what wire goes where. My question, the plug on the clock has 4 pins Grd, headlamp, domelamp and ignition, but the plug on the main harness has 5 pins. The extra pin is Hot all the time and the other 4 match the back of the radio. Is the Hot pin used? What does the radio use for it's memory when the ignition is off?
AHH! But the 5th pin isn't hot all the time, it's hot with the door open! I noticed that myself. I got lucky when I first hooked it up that I picked the right one. Later I added lights under the dash that I got from the junkyard. I made my own harness from both sides of the dash that plugged into the 5th wire so they come on when you open the door.
The pin that really is hot all the time, not just with the door, needs to be hooked to the clock to keep time with the truck off. The power with the key on lights up the display when you turn the truck on. Power with the lights makes the display dim at night, and the ground is the, errr, ground...
