symptom...I put truck in drive and for 2/3 feet all is good then I feel something. It makes no noise, but it feels like something grabs. It soesn't feel like it slipped first, I just feel a second "grab". It's hard to describe, but is there some "play" somewhere? Any known issues? Thanks.
That is more than likely just the front drive line engaging. If all you feel is it grabbing then it goes fine, dont worry about it. Only when you start getting clunks and grinds is when you have a prob.
2 wheel drive. I never paid attention in 4 wheel. If I'm in 4wd, I usually have other things going on to keep me occupied. I'll try to notice next time.
It could be almost anything. The only way to know is to get the rear wheels off the ground safely and start checking for slack.
I have had automatic transmissions doing something like you describe. There could be some sort of problem in the transmission, if it is an automagic that causes the clutches to drop in late.
It could also be the slip yoke on the rear driveshaft binding on the output shaft of the transfer case. Remove the rear shaft and lube the inside of the yoke with (preferably) Teflon grease from your dealer or some other good quality grease and see if that helps.
It feels as though it is definately in the rear of the truck. It doesn't feel right under me. I'll check it out as soon as weather gets a bit better. It's been 0 to 6 degrees here for a few days. Thanks guys.
AHHHHHh 2 WD is when it happens. My bad....thought it was when you went into 4wd. Just an FYI...there was a TSB on our trucks that was meant to get rid of shudder when slowing and accelerating and a slight "tug" when accelerating from a stop. It says to clean the slip joint on the drive line and lube with SILCONE gease. Guess the normal stuff isnt good enough.
OK. drove home in snow. I paid attention to any possible "tugging". It was fine. Back into 2wd, and the tugging re-appears. Still simply a lubrication issue?
My truck did the same thing, dropped driveline and lubed slip yoke with Ford teflon grease. Tug went away, but re- apeared after a couple of weeks. I am wondering if the slip yoke needs to be a few thousands tighter???? This seems to be an on going issue with alot of these ford trucks. Is there a better fix than adding grease every two weeks or so???? or is this "NORMAL"??? Is it ok for that TUG to be there? But overall when the grease is added, the truck sure does take off better from a stop. Rich
