Hi, I am at my wits end here in Nebraska. I have a 2000 X with the PSD. It has 220,000 miles on here. I have not had any problems starting here until this past week. She will not start, I have put more than the ratio of DieselKleen (white) than they stated. I have plugged this fat hog in and she still is not starting. I replaced both batteries two nights ago, yesterday she started right up but I let my dad borrow the truck because he is in Minnesota and the pig wouldn't start up this morning. He said he put additive in and plugged her in last night. I don't know where else to look? Any help with this and I would greatly appreciate it.
this is just a shot in the dark....
make sure you see the rpm needle moving when cranking... no moving means its probably a bad cps (cam position sensor)... if it is moving, how fast is the engine cranking over? it has to be cranking fast enough to light off (a guess is about 500rpm).
it is possible to buy new bad batteries, you can try to jump it off just like a gasser and see if it will start... also if you did not get the battery terminal ends good and clean and good and tight, it wont crank fast enough, and once it is running it wont charge back up properly. I alway recommend that you smear some dieletric (conductive) grease on and in terminals before you connect and smear what squishes out all over the connection once it is tight. the dielectric grease conducts electricity, fills pits, voids, and out of round, as well as help prevent corrosion. you can get conductive grease (dielectric) at most autoparts stores, I got mine at autozone.
No injection cycle or no fuel pressure. Open fuel bowl drain, cycle key, does the fuel come out under pressure? No pressure, cycle key and listen for fuel pump to cycle. Inside of frame under drivers floor. If yes remove plug in top of HPOP, check level, should be no more than 1 inch from top. If level is low, top it off and try to start. How many miles on oil and filter?
Does the truck blow smoke while cranking? Does the tach move while cranking? Does the truck even crank? How much additive have you got in this thing? Changed the fuel filter and air filter lately? Drained the fuel bowl? Could be anything from the CPS, to tainted fuel, fuel delivery problem, computer prob, etc...
if by chance it is the batteries, once you get it jumped off and running, measure the voltage at the battery terminals. if it is below 12.5 VDC you could have a bad alternator... that will kill any new battery
Thanks for all the responses. The tach is moving, which defeats the cps idea. I too thought about that. The fuel filter was changed the last week of December. I changed the oil yesterday morning. The truck had been shut off and then restarted yesterday many times. I will don't think it is the altenator but I do not have the truck in front of me to put the meter on it. I have not checked out the Hpop ( what is that?) Sorry for my ignorance. Thanks for all your help.
