Timing/Overheating
Hot stalling, intermittent starting when hot, bad spark knock. Had a shop replace the TFI module and it appeared to have fixed the problem, for about thirty miles. Started running very hot again.
I have replaced plugs, wires, cap/rotor, battery, cables, thermostat, radiator cap, checked the water pump, fan, and flushed the coolant. I checked the timing and found it to be about 15 BTDC-- spec calls for 10 BTDC. Corrected the timing and it runs as bad or worse-- same symptoms. It idles fine with the SPOUT unplugged, but seems to trip up when I hook it back up. I know that unhooking the SPOUT bypasses the EEC, so that makes sense.
Appears to be getting sufficient spark and charging system is working. No known problems with fuel system.
I have read many of the posts regarding bad TFI's. Could mine have gone bad already? If so, is there a contributing factor or just lucky enough to get a bad part? Could the PIP or EEC/PCM be bad? How do I check?
I have very limited tools and no testing equipment other than a multimeter, and I am not excited about testing all the wires or pins in the module(s).
Thanks,
JT
