Okay Guys I feel a little foolish about this question but I need my curiosities and concerns put to ease. I recently purchased a gently used 04 Explorer Eddie Bauer V6. It's already been to the shop and had the solonoid issue fixed. I have felt a slight rough engagement into reverse once or twice since the repair. I may have been on a slight incline other than that no more "solonoid" issue. Ohh and no more hard shifts while driving.
I have now noticed something that may or may not be normal explorer driving conditions and I was hoping that someone could clearify it for me.
While driving in the city under normal accelaration i really notice the SUV upshifting, it seems to take almost too long to upshift. It seems to loose to much power before kicking into the next gear when it does kick into the other gear its not rough. It's sorta like a standard tranny and someone is taking their sweet *** time putting it into the next gear and re-applying the accelerator. I generally notice this around 20 - 25km mark and then again around 50 - 60 km mark.
I hope you understand my explaination but I really have no other way to explain it......I also hope you can put me at ease or give me some direction.
I think that I might know what you mean... Mine sometimes tkaes a lot time shifting and it really lurches, like a standard. I think that these transmissions briefly go into neutral during the shift, like a standard does. Even if it doesn't go into neutral, the 5R55 isn't the smoothest-shifting tranny out there, so i think that it's normal.
I really hope so, I was beginning to think that there may have been some damge done to the transmission due to the solonoid issue. The truck has about 30,000 Km's on it and well the solonoid issue that means the previous owner drove it around with fixing the solonoid issue!!!!!!!!
So who knows what damage could have occured!!!

Put my '04 in the shop today for the 04b22 trans fluid thing and mentioned to the service manager that the 2-3 shift felt like someone was clutching a standard trans. Surprisingly, he knew exactly what I was referring to and said there was a fix for it - will let you know more when I get it back, two days to repair.
my 2004 does the exact thing you are describing. im will be waiting for your reply about the fix. it is a kinda cool shift pattern but i dont want to do any damage to the trans. please let me know how you make out. i personally thought that the computer was slightly backing off the throttle until the shift was complete but it is the only ford that i have had that does this. i have had only fords my whole life and i think that they are the only auto to buy. quality is job one.
REALLY! A fix eh, well my dealership told me that it was a normal shifting pattern for my tranny. If you get it fixed please post the Service bulliten number or what it was they fixed.......
Got it back today and can say that it defiantly has a better feel to the shifts. It does still have a little bit of that "lag" feel in the 1-2 and 2-3 shift (so there may be some truth to the statement above about these transmissions having that "shifting pattern" to them) BUT it is much less pronounced and less duration. For the record - the Taurus they gave me to drive had the same shift feel as my explorer with the new parts does now. So it may not be the smoothest tranny in the world, but I would considerate it more than acceptable now - note that I do not think the Taurus has the same Tranny, I could already see the replies coming - just that another electron shift tranny felt the same. My 04 ranger with the almost same transmission does have a much "stiffer" feel to it, different program I guess. The part they changed was 4L2Z-7G391-AA Bdy Asy-Trans and 12 quarts of Mercon V. The tech or service manager wrote my long explanation up as "customer states incorrect shift ration between 2nd and 3rd"
