I found a dana 70 that I can get. I am told that it is from a late 70's early 80's ford motorhome. Is it worth anything? I'm looking for an axle to replace me semi float sterling in my F250. I changed the dana 60 to 4.10's when I swap it in this summer, I figure it's alot easier for me to find a full-float axle that already geared 4.10, and cheaper to buy the whole axle than the gears and set up kit to change the ratio over on one.
Most all of the D70's I've seen that come from motorhomes are duallys. Do you know if this one is or not? If it IS a dually and your truck isn't then it's not worth the hassle.
I keep telling myself I'll find a 4:10 dana 70 somewhere. You know how it is when you are looking for something, you can't find it when you want it. I may hold out, I don't want some odd ball under my truck that I'll have a hard time finding parts for later. I was just wondering if any one knew anything. It seems odd that the wms to wms is so close to a single wheel pickups.
Well, you'd have to look to make sure, but I'm still wondering if its not a d80. I imagine if you hold out it shouldn't be too tough to find a D70 with 4.10s. Thats what mine had in it.
Its not that its not doable, its just why bother when you can find single wheel 70s all over the place for cheap? Maybe I'm just lazy
When you ask if its worth it, do mean upgrading to a 70? Yes.
What do they want for it? You should be able to find good 70s for @$100.
i guess what i am asking is what is the downsize to the dually D70's as opposed to any other D70's? hell i have thought about throwing the dually hubs back on my D60 to get a wider stance up front! that way my rear tires would be less likely to fall in my front tires ruts!
big blue, you realize that most of the time the axle itself isn't all that much wider but rather the lug studs are very long which allow for the use of dual wheels!
I'm going to look at this axle personally sometime in the next week. I'll probably get it because it is cheap, and its already pulled. Even if the it isn't worth swapping, it still has good gears, carrier, etc. Searching on the web I've found out 70-2 apparently doesn't mean dually, there were singles made that had that same casting. There seems to be a big push to scrap everything in this area lately. I'd rather just get a truck 70, bolt it in and be done with it.

-cutts-
The width will be wrong and he will for sure have to grind the perches off...but come to think of that he'll probably have to do that with the single too. There are the ones out there that will bolt right up but you have to look for awhile.

It's the width is what concerns me. Spring perches are no big deal but from what I've seen you need to change either the drums or hubs or something (don't remember exactly . . . big surprise ) to get the track width back to normal. So by the time you do all that it's not worth it. D70's should be fairly easy to find so if that one isn't what you're looking for just be patient.

i need to move up by you, i just called almost every salvage in the central oklahoma area, all the dana 60's and 70's here are going between $400 and $1000, and thats salvage prices!!! i just came across one place who said they have a bunch of Dana 70's, but we might have to piece one together for $350.......what a crock!!!!!! i wonder what it would cost to ship one halfway across the country..........
