Thanks, I will listen for that also but it really sounds like a real high speed noise and goes away within a couple of seconds. I really need to drive it or start it myself for a while to try to pin it down.

Thanks again Synback.

My 95 Explorer makes a similar noise only when cold, but sounds like a loud bird chirping or metal scraping intermittinly, like two or three times very quick; only last about a second or so each time and goes away quickly. It never makes this noise when warmed up. It sounds like it is coming from down low around bell housing area. Is this where the cam sensor bearing is? Thanks, dybeepvw

Scott, if you're replacing the belt anyway I highly recommend replacing the tensioner pully while you're in there. Should be about $35 at autozone. Mine fell off the engine on to the street last week - didn't damage anything else luckily. At first just a squeal at start-up, but it became a constant noise by the time it failed.

Hey tnmale46.
Sorry to say I don't know. I changed the plugs and wires that weekend and while it was on stands (pull both wheels to get the plugs) I planned the starter trick. I was bushed but went under anyway. The starter on this little beast (4.0 with 4WD) is hidden above the front axle housing (I believe that was it, maybe cross member or whatever for the 4WD) and was going to be a trick like the plugs. Finger job in the blind. Not that day it wasn't. I left it until the weather and time off was right. I asked my wife how the truck ran as the plugs looked like s__t after 102K. She said great, the noise was gone. Right. Ran the same but no noise. I did not hit her. The weather has warmed up so that is why the problem is gone. Hopefully I will not be like a roofer who only fixes things when he can see the leak. I'll get the starter out in a month or so??? Will update you. The sound, as I heard it, sounded spot on for your thread although location unknown.

Thanks again and hope to reply soon.

i believe the noise you hear is the power sterring pump pumping fluid. when the fluid is cold it is a little thicker and with that type of pump the vanes make that noise until the fluid starts moving. i have 2 new fords and a new chevy and they all do it for just a second or so on cold start. like below 40 degrees

That was my initial opinion BOJOFASO. This would be no problem but the noise really sounds more like a chain (bad news) or something rubbing/scraping (like pump impellers, good news). I am not overly concerned but will clean the starter and cycle some Lucas conditioner through the power steering and see what next Winter brings. I said chain but it is not the notorious timing chain I don't think. Not really a chain rattle there from inside the truck. From under the hood there is too much startup, high idle noise and the bothersome noise only lasts a second (pump I hope). Thanks for the thread addition....
