It depends on what your doing with the truck if you are going to pull a trailer or anything You would probably want a cooler stat. If you are going to just cruse around the highway you may want a warmer one.

I did notice you live in CA, With traffic the way it is here I run a 165 so I don't overheat in town. I have been thinking on a 180 and adding a electric fan for town driving. If you run to cool you will lose some of your gas mileage.

Another good idea is to order a fail safe thermostat, so if it fails it fails open so you won't fry your engine.

Good luck

If you go by the FORD book, you need a 175-180*F T/Stat.

I would have answered sooner had this thread been posted in the engine forums

I can't say for sure about 1964 but I can say that most years "by the book" the stock temperature is 195. I always thought 180 was the stock temp until I got in the business. When I first got in the business I thought that 195 would be the temp for later models but now I know that even most of the older models are 195. This is based on aftermarket cataloging not manufacturer shop info.

Another thing to think about when changing stats is what kind of heat do you want in the cabin. There is a very noticable difference between 165 and 195, or even 180 for that matter when it comes to heat. Its 18 outside tonight and I'll take the 195....
