My dad recently got his 04 2wd 5.4 v8 stuck in some wet squishy clay so i came out with my truck hooked a chain to my front hooks and to his hitch, and tried to back out in 4lo, well only my left front and right rear were spinning, and i wasnt moving him. I turned my truck around put the chain on my hitch and on his hitch, and pulled him right out in 4lo with all four of my wheels spinning. Can any one exlpain why in reverse the front end doesnt lock out?
It's all in the way your tires were loaded. There is no 'locked out' in the front end....it's an open differential. The tire with the least amount of traction is going to spin (easiest to turn). You got lucky to have all 4 driving when you pulled him out while pulling forward. There's nothing wrong with your truck..at least you know that your 4wd works!
i don't believe your L/S diff works going backwards since everything is reversed. i could definitely be wrong but i am pretty sure that's how the clutch discs work. just get ya some detroits front and rear and be done with it!
If my truck came with an open rear end, does that mean it came with an open differential on the front? I always thought that the front was limited slip, or jus completley locked out, whats the point of havin 4x4 if only 1 front wheel is turnin??
But in forward Both front wheels are always gettin power theres never any question about that, it always appears that my front is is completley locked out in forward.
if your in slippery mud all four wheels can turn easily with an open diff...unless you have lockers or spools any 4x4 is technically only a 4x2, meaning you only have true power to one wheel front and rear, usually the left front and right rear, my D60's arent locked to my knowledge but in the mud all four tires are slinging mud everywhere, but in high traction situations only the left front and right rear do any work.......
Detroit in the rear but an ARB(air locker) in the front, having a locker in the front can make it pain to drive.
you shouldn't be driving it on dry pavement or dirt anyway you should only be using 4wd when you are on slippery surfaces, and then it doesn't make any difference. Personally I have always thought an ARB was a waste of money, and time, and another possibility of breakage. either you do or you don't need a locker so make up your mind, and spend the extra grand on engine upgrades.

i have my front and rear welded and i wouldn't waste the few hundred on Detroits myself, but i am not going to suggest welding to someone who wheels a 97 1/2 ton with a 4.6L! it just wouldn't be right.
i agree that ARB's have an extra vulnerability but in no way do I think they are a waste of money! they are just as strong as a detroit and they are less squirrely than Detroits.
also if you drive your truck in 4x4 for long distances on the pavement....well, i feel sorry for your wallet later down the road!
you will just have to look at the tags on your axles and call ford with the numbers to get exact info. they can tell you loads more than we can!
the only true 4x4 from the factory that i can think of off the top of my head is the Jeep Rubicon (which my dad bought a couple of months ago and I have to admit that I am quite impressed so far!!!)
Hey true 4x4 or not, limited slip or not, open diff.
She still plows threw holes half way up the doors with street tires
then come play ....i wanna see this beast plow a trail for me! i mean i know that 4.6L puts out a fair amount of power and those street tires sure keep themselves clean!
