Overcooling issue

83 F-150 4x4 300 six. Temp guage barely comes off cold, new thermstat and antifreeze, no leaks and heat will barely get warm. The old thermostat was not stuck either. What should I try next. Thanks,

Scott

Are you using the proper 190-195 degree thermostat? If so, I would suspect a plugged heater core and a bad gage sender. If not, put one in.

I think I found the problem. The fan is a regular fan, not a clutch fan. Am I correct in thinking it should have a clutch fan? By the way, the thermostst is a 195 and the heater core was also flushed.

My 4x4 300 six has a direct drive fan. That will not cause the engine to over cool. All the water going into the radiator to be cooled must pass the thermostat. Everything else is recirculated around the engine and heater core. If the thermostat is OK, it must be very cold where your at and you make short trips that are not long enough for everything get up to temp. Good luck.

Not really cold here in the center of NC. 20 mile trips and the heat is barely warm. I have half the radiator covered and it still runs very cool and the heat is only warm. I can't figure this one out.

Does the radiator seem to get warm at all? If the engine is cold and heater is cold, the radiator should be cold too. I've seen cheap thermostats open way to early, causing the engine to never actually get a chance to warm up...

pull the thermostat and double check it in a pot of boiling water. even if the fan andor temp outside was to blame the radiator should get warm. if not, the stat is open and the coolant never get's a chance to get warm.

Thermostat was checked before install and opened at 190. I let the thing run about 30 minutes today after driving about 30 minutes and could put my hands on the engine with no trouble. Could the thing just run that cool?? Outside temp was around 34f.
