I have a 86 250 with a 460 it turns over but will not fire,is there any way to check a internal fuel pump?-It had been sitting for about a year.can pumps go bad from just sitting? Thanks,Rick.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-Sep-02 AT 03:41 PM (EST)]well "far"
ill try my best to help you out here okay lets see if you have gone over the basic stuff !1 is there fuel in the tank ??if there is is there spark ??(if you pull a spark plug and leave it in the end of the plug wire and lay the loose plug near a metal suface have a friend crank the engine and see if there is spark jumping from the plug )next if there is spark when you originally tried to start the truck and it wouldnt start did it crank over fast or slow if it was slow you could have a low battery or the timing could be off.
to my knowledge an easy way to test if your engine is getting fuel (if iut is fuel injected) there should be a small plastic cap somewhere on the fuel rail that you can take off and there is a small valve like what is in youre tired valve stem and if you depress this thing with something you should get some fuel out of this
and also to my knowledge i dont think the in tank pumps go bad too often
and just as a side note if i were you i would chk all the fuses out and chk all electrical connections on the distributor cap
and a piece of info that just came to mind there is a module on the side of youre distributor called the tfi module which these are somewhat known for going bad and causing no spark and if i remember correctly there is a special tool for removing the screws that hold this on
i hope i was of some help anyway
Hi thanks, yes I do have fuel and a good spark, the truck did try to start when we "primed" the carb but just for a second or two(It is NOT a fuel injected 460). Good wires and plugs and dist. Thanks, Rick
Hi Rick, I have an '86 F250 that sat for 8 years, without being started. My truck has a carb as well. The fuel pump on mine is on the front, bottom driverside of the engine and is mechanical. There is a module on the drivers side fender well (top). I believe it is called an Electronic Spark Control Module. Anyway, if that is bad, it might cause it to not start (I think they are about $20 at the parts store). I did spray some carb. cleaner in the intake (I was told not to use starting fluid because it is hard on the engine). Believe it or not, My truck started on the third try, although the valve cover gaskets had dried up and cracked, and the water pump was fried. The truck now starts and runs excellent. I would also recommend at least a partial rebuild on the carb, as mine (with 85,000 miles) was quite dirty, and many of the parts were dry and brittle (rebuild kit was $85 at Napa).
That's all I can think of for now... Let me know how it goes
well the only thing that comes to mind at the present time knowing this is dumb question but is there a chance youre fuel lines are kinked someplace or possibly fuel filter is clogged
I guess I must have a real different '86 because my fuel pump is in-tank not on the block(I wish it was)and it is carb'ed I think my pump is gone am trying to see if there is a way to check to see if it is working. Thanks,Rick
well rick i can tell you this it is between the tank and the carb somewhere there is 3 possible types the 1st goes in line with a sectioin of rubber hos (chances are underneath along the frame rail)
which is simple pull 2 clamps and change filter
the 2nd type goes in line right at the end of youre feed fuel line at the carb it is pretty obvious to spot a canister that has the feed line screwed into it and is intern screwed into the carb (this is my setup on my ranger)
the 3rd possibility is ythere is a setup with a small screen that is held inside the carb by a small fitting and a rubber gasket and this fitting screws into the carb and the line screws into it so you would remove the line from the fitting and remove this fitting and you should find this screen in side if this is youre setup
