Ok, I have an 84 F150, 300 I-6, manual transmission, no vacuum advance on my distributor. Here is one problem. My rotor and distributor blew up a few years ago and I was told the distributor on my truck is from an 85, since it is smaller than the "normal" 84 ( I was told this by some back-woods auto parts guy while stranded on the freeway). Now, everyone tells me I should have a vaccum advance on my distributor but I dont. Now to my question, is there anyway from this info if you can tell me:
1) If I have a "computer" in my truck
2) What does it do (could it help my find out wy my truck idles so hard)
3) Where is it
4) Do they make a code reader for it, and if so how does one go about using it?
Sorry for so many questions, but I keep reading about people reading their computer diagnostics and fixing their problems and I have many I need to fix and cant figure out myself.
An 84 with a 300 *should* have a computer, especially since you said you didn't have vacuum advance. You would have the TFI-IV ignition system, which is computer controlled. The computer is located up under the dash to the right of the steering column. You should see a wiring harness coming through the firewall to it. You can buy a code reader, but all you really need to read the codes is a test light and jumper wire. This site tells how to read codes and what they mean:
I am not sure about an 84, But my computer for
a 1982 F-150 351w is located underneith my
driver seat. The smaller black box under the
dash to right of my steering column is my
cruise control ampflifer.
