Hey I have been researching exhaust for my 93 bronc with 351. This weekend i'm taking her in to get it done. it will go factory y pipe (for now anyway) into single high-flow cat 3' pipe from there to 3' single in dual 2.5' out original 40 flowmaster (not delta flow or super 40 sp 40 is slightly quieter) and exit the beast through allready present 3in tips out the rear corners. i looked here and everywhere else to find the loudest system with dual pipes i could get for reasonable cost. Apparently if you don't replace the dual cat factory setup it don't matter what muffler you put on, they choke the sound out. It has the factory cats and single in dual out 50 flow on it now (i think) and you can't even tell. that stuff was put on by the previous owner. So anyone else thats looking into this stuff don't waste your money on mufflers unless you get the cats replaced. i'd like any and ALL feedback on what you all think she'll sound like. thanks!
I use to run Open Hedders on my 78 351 Bronco!! Man that was great!! Then I put stright pipes on it You could hear it for miles!! I don't think it will be that loud!!
2.5" straight pipes off stock headers w/ 'X' pipe, two flowmaster delta 40's - Sounds good, breathes well - not as loud as open pipes, or the purple hornies I started out with - but a couple 300 mile road trips on the freeway doing 80-90 with a 351 w convinced me I didn't really want it that loud anyways
Finding someone to even bend the pipe for me was close to impossible, took the cats off (Live in non-emission county) but still illegal for any exhaust shop to even BEND a piece of pipe that would go where the stock cat was - took lots and lots of pipe (4 12' pipes) to do - had to pretty much created the 'X' were the stock y pipe went then follow the stock single exhaust pattern to the rear axle before we split both out right behind the tires - not an easy project, but a fun one hehe

Loud to an extent, is good. I like the sound of a V8 engine breathing properly. Music to my ears. The reality of "loud" is that if you use your Bronco off road in a state recreation area, too loud may get you asked to leave. If you're off road in Baja cookin' sand and skating dunes loud doesn't matter. If your rock crawling, it can be a distraction. I had high flow cats on true duals with Magnaflow cans and an exit point just behind each rear wheel. She had a subtle muscular sound that could flex into a quiet roar (not at the drag strip, ya know) when needed. Fit the decibel level with your lifestyle. Music is hard to hear with open pipes. Class, not crass is the object.

I have almost the same exact setup on my Bronco except I just have one stock cat. It has a very nice sound. Nice purr at idle and screams when you get on it, but I would prefer louder. It is possible the stock Y pipe and factory cat could be hurting my sound so I plan on changing that come tax return time.
what high flow cat are you buying.. i need to find a good one
and does anyone know the diameter of the stock y pipe is it 3"?? also will a 91 5.0 pass emisions with a high flow cat and 40 series???
i wanna get rid of those two cats but want to make sure that the truck will pass emissions when i put a high flow on.
thx
He does have a point.. any way heres my story behind my exhaust.. Stupid me decided to replace piping to 3'' with stock everything except muffler, i first started with a 40 delta, single in duel out. Then i went with a glasspack, got louder but not loud enuff. i gave my delta 40 to my friend, he has a 99 nissan frontier 4 bannger and it was louder on that and sounded alot cleaner. But if i get high flow all around the y-pipe and cat will i be **** out of luck when emmisions rolls around? if anyone knows please tell!! Thanks
I have stock exhaust Except after the 2nd cat I had 3" pipe installed, It sounds pretty good! a nice growl to it. ONly problem is the bottle neck in the system, its 3" out of the first cat and into the 2nd, then it goes to 2.5 inch out the 2nd cat, kinda dumb? Wouldn't mind the bassani Y pipe, and some high flow cats, but is it really worth all that money? to keep it legal you need the $375 bassani pie that hasa cat on it already. and then you'd still have stock manifolds, so drop another few hundred there for the bassani headers, youd be near $800 with labor to get the "ultimate" street legal setup. Thats not counting a muffler if you go that route, figure another $60 for the muffler (thats for the cheap ones!) I love flowmasters, but I had a super 40 on my bronco and it barely made a sound, because of the cats. but now it sounds great with no mufflers! OH, my old 1971 F100 had true duals wit headers and flowmaster 40's . I never had so many compliments on exhaust tone as that! Good luck with what ever you chose!
Hey RX7, what size motor did the F100 have? I have 351W with Thrush turbo's on my re-build with Hooker headers & true duals, cost was a problem and the turbo's fit my budget. The mufflers have only a couple of miles on them, I was told to wait and run them a little longer and let the packing expand a bit, right now I don't know if I like the sound??? I just started to get a little rumble out of them when I let off the gas, but man she rumbles when you get on the gas!! Just don't know if I like it??? I have nieghbors to consider @ 4:30 A.M. when I go fishing.

it was a 302 with an edelbrock intake and a street cam, I miss that old beast! I've owned 3 of them, all 2 wheel drive, all 302's.
I also owned a 1986 rx7 (hence the name) with custom 2.5 exhaust all the way back, no cats on the rotory motor , there was three from the factory! y'd off to 2 2.5" super turbos, In my situation it was too loud at first! But then it settled down and it sounded just right.
I have owned 53 (give or take a few cars since 16, and I'm 25 now. Don't try thta at home, not good on relationships. lol
rx7 if you are reffering to the bassani y pipe like the one found on truckperformance.com... that wont work...thats an off road pipe..its essentially open headers...if i went all out id get long headers and an X pipe to duals...but thats just me...screw y pipe
I have replaced mine with 2.5 all the way out and delta flow 40. I ran the truck with exhaust off and cats still on and was surprised how quiet it was. Once I put the 40 delta flow on it was loud as all get out of the garage. Interior resonance was incredible and creates a sound pressure pulse inside that riddles the eardrums like a crazy sound system. I ended out insulating the floor with .75" high density Insulating foam padding which helps a little. I gueass loudness depends on taste. I only want the mellow 5.0 flow not the muscle car kick-a$$ hear me comin from a mile away. Delta 50's are really quiet alternatives to stock and still boost performance "a little". I might actually redo the exhaust this year with duals.
So its quiet with the cats on and louder with the muffler and cats? No way, You must have cut the cats out, because I had a super 40 on mine with cats and it barely made a peep over the stock muffler.
