Last Friday my fuel guage decided to jump all the way over past full and stay there. I was going down a pretty bumpy highway when it happened. It stayed there for the rest of the trip and didn't change even if I switched tanks. After a couple of hours I started it again to head home and the guage went back to normal reading the right levels.
I took a long trip for the Memorial Day weekend and the guage was fine when I left the house on Friday night. It read the right levels for about an hour then went wacky again going all the way past full and stayed there until I got up north (about 2 more hours). When I started the truck the next day, it read the right levels again.
Both times the guage never went back to normal until I restarted the truck. But, Sunday same thing happened with the guage going wacky but then shortly after it went back to normal.
Anybody have any ideas? It's a 91 F150 with a 300/6, 4X2, EFI, duel tanks if any of that makes a difference. I also did just replace the front fuel tank myself. Used the same fuel pump assembly and electrical connectors. Thanks.
Fords fuel gauge work with a ground, the more ground the higher the guage goes, so if your gauge went all the way, you probaly have a short on the gauge wire that leads from the tank to the dash, first check your sending unit, unplug the wires on top of the fuel tank and see if the sending unit is not the bad one. If you unplug and the gauge still reads full, you have a short in the wiring.
I HAVE A 87 F150 4X2 I6 WITH A FUEL GAUGE PROBLEM WHEN YOU FILL IT UP IT WILL NOT READ RIGHT UNTILL IT HITS 1/2 TANK I TALKED TO A GUY A FORD AND HE SAID IT WAS THE CONTACT RING THAT THE FLOAT MAKES CONTACT WITH HOPE THIS HELPS U
