I've got a 85 Bronco II, 4x4 with and newly rebuilt 2.8L. I'm struggling with two problems with the gauges. The fuel gauge will read full until it hits half a tank and then drops to empty. I've been trying to find out when the fuel sending unit is located, and where I can find a replacement part.
The second problem is with the Temperature gauge, sometimes it works fine and other times it shows that the engine is red lined in the hot zone. I checked the temerature with an IR gun and it is actually running fine the gauge is just wrong. I replaced the temp sending unit and it still does the same thing.
I'm going to order up a new voltage regulator for the instrument cluster and se if that helps, anybody else have an idea of where to look?
your floater is not working right you need a new fuel assembly usually costs about 105 with tax at advance auto parts Masters part number # E2197S comes with pump ready to go . second question you got it voltage regulator if that's not it you have some bad wiring.
Thanks for the info on the sending unit, I was afraid that it was in the tank, that's going to be a real pain.
Billsdaddy: the voltage regulator for the instruments is mounted on the back of the Instrument cluster, you have to pull the dash panels and then disconnect the speedo cable and wiring plug. It looks like the thing is riveted onto the plastic, so it might be interesting to replace, I'll let you know how it goes. My replacement should be here the middle of next week.
Got my Instrument cluster voltage regulator today, it looks like it's going to be a real easy replacement, (after you get the dash torn apart), the thing is held in with one screw and snaps on the cluster just like a 9-volt battery. I'm hoping to get in installed after work today and I'll let everyone know if it was worth the $25.00 or if I'm going to have to start looking for a clean way to replace all the crappy gauges with new ones.
Good News !! Yeserday I installed the new Inst. Cluster voltage regulator and it reolved my problems with the oil pressure and temerature gagues. The gas gauge is still not working right but i'm convinced it's the float/sending unit on that one.
So if anyone is having problems with their oil pressure and/or temp gauge I'd recommend swaping out the voltage regulator, it's cheap ($25.00) and only took me 10 minutes to do ( 5 miniutes of that was fighting with the speedo cable.)
Awesome! How hard is it to take the cluster out, and, more importantly, can you get it back together without it rattling, falling in your lap as you drive, etc???? Time to change mine out I guess.
it doesn't take much you take off your dash bezel ,and you start with removing the dash cluster itself need to put your hand around and disconnect all wiring connections there should be two becareful with all the lightbulbs connected to the back of the cluster and then you have the speedometer cable to deal with you have to push on both sides of the connection in order you loosen the cable while your at it you may want to think about getting white gauges in your dash.
Monty06 is right about getting the cluster out, it's not that big of a deal. You first have to pop off the plastic trim strips along the bottom of dash, they're held on with spring clips so just gently pry them off (you'll have to take the headlight **** off also), then you'll find a bunch of screws that hold on the dash bezel, some along the top under the dashboard and some along the bottom where you removed the trim strips. After that you remove the screws holding the instrument cluster on and disconnect the speedo cable as Monty06 described, (it's a pain because you have to reach up under the dash to do it), there's a main wiring plug that you disconnect by squeezing both ends and pulling it loose, mine had two lights that had to be disconnected (the 4x4 and emmisions lamps) the rest are pluggged right into the cluster.
Just remember that you're dealing with old, brittle plastic, so take your time and be gentle.
While I had mine out I cleaned the clear plastic covers with plastic polish, replaced all the bulbs and cleaned all the connectors by rubbing them with an eraser. Note: be careful about cleaning the guage faces , the paint will rub right off, just blow off the dust and leave it at that.
hi i have an 89 bII with 2.9 ... do any of you know if this year has the voltage regulator on the back of the clusteR? I am having the same problem with temperature guage and fuel guage... i just had my sending unit and other internal tank parts replaced last year, and the guage stopped working about the same time the temp guage stopped... I have replaced the brass sensor that screws in near the coolant neck, along with the wire that connects to it.. still no luck.... if the 89 had this also... can someone tell me where to get that regulator from for $25 bucks, my local parts store doesnt even have a listing they said.
from 88-90 the b2 was changed it might be in the same place might not
als there is a another name for the voltage regulator some autoparts stores
don't have it as regulator.

I got mine from rockauto it was a STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS part # VRC606 and cost $22.79 plus $6.00 shipping. (They have a website (but I guess I can't put the URL in my reply), just do a google search on rockauto. )
I've found that RockAuto has a nice selection of all kinds of hard to find parts for the BII's. I did a complete engine rebuild and replaced almost everything under the hood with parts I got from them.
