Friction Modifier for rear diff
Make sure that you check out the owners manual for the proper amount of LS additive, and purchase accordingly.
There are a few gear oils that have the LS additive already in them, or simply don't require it, and they will say on the bottle.
Get down on the ground and look at your Diff. Housing from the rear.
If you see two aluminum tags you need the limited slip additive. The tag on the left should tell you exactly what oil to use (75-W140 on mine). The additive amount and oil capacity is listed in the fluid level matrix in the back of your owner's guide (5.5 - 5.8 pints of Synthetic?) I don't know about hypoid gear oil except that it smells really bad!
Go to a big auto parts delaer and ask for posi-limited slip additive. The little jug should say right on it "for posi-traction and limited slip differentials" or something like that.
Also, the good stuff states the it " meets or exceeds mfg. specifications for Gm, Ford etc.. ")
P.s. While you are in there check your clutches and gears for excess wear. Clean the fill plug magnet too.
Tip: if you jack up your truck and have both wheels free, hold one wheel firmly and have an assistant turn the other wheel. If the force required to turn your wheel is light or real easy, consider a new clutch kit. I know this because I have to do this soon. My mechanic showed me this trick. I first noticed a shimmy or shudder in my rear-end, thus the investigations into the clutches.
