Can someone explain to me what the vent tubes on the Transmission, Transfer Case and Axle are for? I have read people having problems because water goes into them when you submerge the axle - forceing them to check and change the fluid. I have also read about individuals who extend them up into the engine compartment to keep water from going into them. Does extending them cause any sort of problems EX. heat buildup because tube is too long now? I drive through a river near my house on a regular basis and I'm thinking about extending mine up to the engine compartment. However before doing so I would like to hear thoughts on the subject. I have an '04 Mazda B4000 4X4

The vent tubes are in fact to realease the pressure build up when they start heating up. Its a natural part of friction created by all of moving parts/gears/bearings. The vent tubes can be relocated easily to a higher point on the vehicle without causing any problems. They also have aftermarket vent "balloons" that are just a heat resistant corrigated tube that expands with the heat, then closes back up when they cool off. I have never personally used them, but have never heard anything bad about them.If you do relocate them, make sure that you use good heat resistant hose, and not just rubber hose. A good place to run them is up in the engine compartment for your front diff., tranny, and t-case and alot of people run their rear diff up to the top of the frame rail or the bottom of the bed.
Also, if you have been crossing this creek already, I would check all of your fluids and change them if you need to. Water in your diffs, tranny, t case will screw them up in a hurry.
Thanks brown20GM for the explaination. Any suggestions on where to purchase heat resistant hosing and/or these vent balloons? I did a quick search for the vent balloons, but only came up with Hot Air balloon links :-).
By the way I'll check the fluids tonight. Is it just as simple as looking on the Tranny dipstick for milky conditions?
Yeah, just take your rig for a little ride to get everything mixed up/warmed up and then just check your dipstick. As for your trasfer case/diffs, its a pretty easy job to just dump the gear oil out and put new oil in. Make sure that you are using what is recommended for oil (check your owners manual, there is probably a little metal tag attached to one of the bolts on your diff cover that tells what kind of oil to use)As for the hose, you can just get it at autozone or whatever, just tell them that you want heat resistant hose, or tell them what it will be used for and they'll know what to give you. I will try to find the info on those "balloons" I read about them on one of these forums.
