I've decided that I want a second, more fuel efficient vehicle for my trips to Seattle and Everett. I only get 10ish mpg in my truck, and I'd like something smaller to take out on long errands. Obviously, I'd prefer a Ford, but options are few with my requirements. I'm looking for a midsize sedan or wagon, with 4-6 cylinders, 4wd or awd, manual trannie, and under $2500 (ie: older, like '80-'90). I can't think of any Fords that meet all these requirements.
I have seen an '84 Audi Quattro 4000S, 5-speed, EFI 2.2L 5 cylinder, 4x4 in excellent condition with 121K for $2000 just up the road, but I'm always wary of companies I'm not real familiar with. Is this a good car, or a good deal? Let me know about suggestions for a vehicle and your opinions of this one.
The Law:-staun
P.S.: Ofcourse I'll keep the truck. It's my favorite stump-pullin', load-haulin', hard-workin', rice embarassin' vehicle in the world.
You don't want an audi - unless you can handle the repair bills. Good car just not cheap to work on.
Now a Crown Victoria is quite nice. There is enough of them out there that they are fairly cheap and are good for 200,000 miles easy. And you have a v-8 getting over 20 mpg on highway. Yes it's a full size but you have rear wheel drive (my preferance), it's comfie and does better than a lot of mid sizes.
Thanks for the advice on the cost of repair. As to my old man, he's still pretty undecided. The Dodge Grand Caravan he's had for 12 years and 200,000 miles was perfect for his needs, and if that was all that mattered, he'd get another. When he got it, he was the owner of a plant nursury, so image wasn't really a concern. Now he's an executive working downtown, and so the "station wagon of the 90's" image doesn't really work for him. He really likes the options and the look of the Explorer, and that's the direction I'm trying to steer him in, but he is still rather averse to driving what all the other suburbanites drive. I just told him to order some wacky color or do something to make it stand out and be unique, but there aren't a whole lot of options in that department.
Partner - my answer is an '89 or '90 Taurus or Sable LX wagon.
You should be able to find them all day long in the papers for right around $2000 in pretty good condition.
The 3.8 V6 with an auto-trans and overdrive gets about 400 miles highway on about an 11 gallon tank, and these cars are loaded with option.
Avoid the light blue paint though, it goes bad, especially on the hood. Look for a dark blue or green if you can find it.
The machines are beautiful on long cross country trips, and with the 'way back seat all the way at the tailgate, you can seat as many as 7 passengers. Plus, you have under-deck storage in the well that last seat folds down into, even with the seat folded up.
Go take a look at one, and see what you think of them. But for my money, I always want to have one of 'em!
Congrats on the car. Hope it works out well for you. By the way I too am interested in what your dad bought. I put in my two cents about a Sport-trac, but still interested in his choice.
